How do you store you negatives?
« on: September 05, 2010, 08:48:31 AM »
Having now gone back to doing some medium format after several years of using only 35mm, I need to source some 120 neg sheets.

I've used various makes/types of sheets in the past and never been 100% happy with any of them so I thought, before buying some more, I'd ask what other people use.

In the past I've used the paper type but I'd prefer clear ones you can see through. The clear acetate ones I always seem to have problems loading. And more recently, I've tried the clear ones that are open all along one edge of each strip so you don't have to push the strip in from the end. They are the easiest to use but I think they can scratch the film unless you're extremely careful.

So, any suggestions?

I've always used the ClearFile Archival Plus ones in 120 and 4x5 - I find them easy to use and I've never had any scratches in the many years I've used them.

The other option is the PrintFile range as sold by Silverprint and others.  They're made of a very soft material indeed, so maybe a good bet if you're using films prone to scratching.  I found them a bit harder to load up though.

For about 30 years, I've used Kenro neg-sleeving in a ring binder/archive box . Works for me; no damaged negs in that time.

+1 for Kenro for me, too.

Now I'm getting back into the swing of film again, I'm also going to set up an Excel spreadsheet with file / sheet numbers showing where and when each roll was taken and (if I can remember) transpose the film / lens / shutter / aperture and filters used information - a bit of analogue "exif" data..... ;D

The only ones I've had scratches with are by Secol. They have an opening the full length of the film strip so the film is put in from the side rather than the end. In theory, I would think it was better but I suspect the edge of the opening is causing the scratches which end up across the width of the film.

I used to use Kenro and had no problems with them but I still prefer clear ones so I can see the negs.

I'll have a look at the ClearFile and PrintFile ones. Thanks.
