Photographica 2010: London 23rd May
« on: May 07, 2010, 12:06:07 PM »
Following on from a separate thread where Miller said he might be popping along to Photographica this year I thought I'd post a link and some info in case anyone here wanted to come along. I'm going to try and make it. I'm currently free, but then things can change quickly at Wenn Mansions w/ regard to family commitments, so we'll see.

It's a great day out. I've been 2 or 3 times before and always enjoyed myself. If I do go along again this year I'll be wielding the Filmwasters video podcast capture device so make sure you wear you posh threads.
 :D ;D

"Photographica is the United Kingdom's largest photographic collectors fair and is organized by a separate sub-committee of the Photographic Collectors Club of Great Britain. Having grown from small beginnings a typical Photographica will have around 200 tables offering everything from daguerreotypes and images, to brass and mahogany field cameras and Leica, through to old and new photographic books, collectible photographic accessories and supplies and tools for restoration. Photographica is international in its stallholders and attendees."

it's on the weekend after my Law finals end - I can think of no better way to celebrate than spending it with a bunch of wasters at a posh camera flea market.

If only I had some cash to spend there too :)

I'll be recovering from a small operation and can think of no better way to put a smile on my face than wandering around the best photographic jumble down South. Lomo and the trendy crowd free and replaced by tank tops and dandruff.  :)

I would say the effort to go is more than rewarded by the variety of trinkets on sale and bargains to boot. The last fair attended yielded a very nice just serviced rare Yashica 12 for 70 quid.

Good shout Ed and I hoped someone would pick up on this. As a newbie I'm just too shy..

Hmmmm, expired film a plenty I'm sure...

Miller has called it exactly right...nary a 'coolhunter', nor trendsetter to be found at Photographica and that's the way we like it.

 ;) ;)

A few snaps from previous trips. The first two by me (that's Leon with the huge camera). The second two by our good mate, Jim Green who I'm sure won't mind me re-posting here.

Looks like a super fun event!
Way better than the Montreal Camera show with it's 50 tables in a dinky Holiday Inn ballroom  :(
Though I did find a few deals there in the past, I've had my share of bad deals (like that Cibachrome drum processor that was "fixed" using dental floss to sew a rubber drive belt)... but still these things are fun events :)

Went before and loved it - don't take too much money, you will spend it!

I'd love to go, but I'll be leaving for (a currently slightly dodgy) Thailand on my honeymoon that day - yikes.

Thats 2 days before my birthday, I can think of no better way to have fun than look at cameras and hang out with the FW gang.

So dare I be proactive and ask what a good time to meet up is?  :D

The committee has finally given consent for me to duck out of a family barbecue and attend this event instead. That in itself is a triumph....knowing whether I'll be able to get there by 11AM is a whole other matter, but I'll aim for it.

Leon, are you training it or driving? If the latter you could always park at mine and I can use you as an excuse to leave at a specific time.

Ken - Victoria is a little outside my patch for coffee but I'm sure we'll find somewhere, I know Ed values a good coffee as much as I do.

If this thing is close to Victoria I will get a bus myself, so as to use Leons new parlance - on or about 11.00am your honour I will be there.

What do people want to do?

Morning tea then assault the exhibition, or Cameras first, food and tea later!

No point hanging around outside - it could be snowing for all I know. Let's meet inside in the cafeteria area which is usually situated underneath the show itself, in the basement. I asked around and there's no great coffee places near Victoria that are open on Sundays, so we may as well go straight there.

Most of us have met before, but if anyone needs to know what Leon or I look like go and watch a few mins of the first Filmwasters podcast...We haven't aged a bit; although just to confuse you  I won't be sporting my wife's pale blue scarf next Sunday  ;)

Well I'm on for this as well now.

I noticed that the venue is 'new' (I've never been before but it shows the 'old' and 'new' venues on the map) so, does that mean there may not be a cafe underneath it? Could cause some confusion if that's the case.

Ken: Do you still want me to look at that Yashica of yours? If so and you want to bring it with you, I could take it away with me.

I was just searching for any info on the venue and I can't find anything about a cafe, though the flyer does mention refreshments. Might be safer to agree to meet outside. Weather looks good for it anyway. So is that the final plan?

Peter, there's a chance that you, Leon and I will be arriving together anyway, so what do we care about the others?

 ;D

Look, here's the best idea. Meet outside at 11AM. If you get bored waiting go inside and hang out wherever the refreshments are.

I'm just being cautious about people hanging outside on the street because public transport in London is appalling at the weekends currently due to Line closures all over the tube. In addition some people are just plain late (e.g. me).

In addition I'll PM everyone my mobile number. See you all tomorrow.

Enjoy the show!
At the time you meet, I'll probably be trying to dream I was there (6 hour difference... by the time you get there, I'll still be getting my night's sleep)

I had a great day at the show. I was really good to put faces to the names. The show was packed on what was an unusually hot May day for London. I have never seen so many cameras in one place at one time.

This is my modest purchase, which I'm very happy with. I popped a battery in when I got home, which is always a nervous moment, but all seems good. I went in looking for something entirely different, but Peter steered me in the direction of the Olympus and I'm grateful for that.

I hope everyone else enjoyed the day as much.

Top day !

Managed to not by more rangefinders of the Canon & Yashica type but did get some SX-70, and 28mm lens plus red filter for my AV-1 and a ToyocaFlex TLR, my intro to medium  format proper.  Found a manual on the web tonight, seems they were badged as many things ...

I concur. We had a great time and it was fantastic to put names to faces. There will obviously be a full report in the next video podcast and I'll post some still here later. Just about to pop out to see a man about a dog...sort of.

Oh, and my purchase? GBP2 on a Bronny rear lens cap.

I had a great time as well, it was great to see the guys I know and meet the ones I hadn't.

I bought a Zeiss Ikon for ?25 and untested stuck it in my motorbike topbox the next day and rode to Spain and France for  2 weeks.

I shot about 6 rolls of film and hope to process them later this week.

Way cool camera to use, I do need to find a boot makers needle and some stout thread to sew the case back together a bit.
