which picture to choose? Your help appreciated.
« on: July 01, 2010, 08:45:00 PM »
I could really do with your advice. I've been going through a 'I'm not happy with anything I'm shooting phase', for the last few weeks. Tomorrow (yes I have left it until the 11th hour) I have to submit one image (fortunately not the actual print) for London Independent Photographers local group show. I know I'll really be disappointed if I don't enter something.

I've sort of narrowed it down to four shots. I've looked at them for so long I can't nearly be objective. It really needs to be something that stands up on it's own without an explanation.

Here we go..

or if you're really keen you could have a look at my Flickr. http://www.flickr.com/photos/wildberrys/

Thanks
Nigel

Out of these I like No. 2 & 3 best.

With No.2 I am drawn to the sharpness of the bottle and wonder what the gentleman is reading.  The picture tells a story to me.

With No. 3  I just like the casual unhurried nature of the smoker compared with the people in the background.  Them being out of focus almost seems to me to make look as of they haven't got the time.

I also had a brief look at your flickr pages and like the picture entitled red.

Only two major tones in this but certainly wouldn't have the same impact without them.

Look forward to others views.

I'm not sure why you feel your not happy with anything you are shooting, If any of these images are taken in this stage, I think they are all good.

You do not mention if this is judged show or just showing for pleasure, either way what ever you choose good luck.

Regards

Mike

Mike I really appreciate your views. It's not a juried show, it's just for fun. But it is with other photographers who's views I respect.

Vicky, I'm supposed to be narrowing it down, don't go introducing other pictures! ;-)

I like the balance in #3 and the misplaced feet in:

Looking at your Flickr pages, it's impressive  how you are able to make strong pictures with both hi and low tech cameras.  Your images make me want to take more opportunities to do photo work.

I think #2 is a winner.
First one... not much to say other than I have a tuque that looks just like that one.
Third one, while being properly composed, is just a bit blah. Probably due to the fact that the focus point is on the trench coat and not on the head...
Fourth one... nice but it just doesn't do it for me...

I like #2 also. I found that one to be the most intriguing for me! I came to this conclusion before I read everyone's comments, so it seems it is popular!

I'm also not objective  ;) but I really like number two.

And there's no need to be dissatisfied with your images. Especially the black and white ones you make are gorgeous! But I understand how you are the worst critic of your work. That happens to me, too!

#2 for me 2!

love the drama in the image, the figures back to the camera works
there is a sense of mystery as has been mentioned.

Love the overall scene and contrast !

best of luck

Thanks everyone for your help and the kind comments. I'm going with the crowd and no.2.

I hadn't forgotten, but it reminds me what a great group this is!  ;D
