Getting a rise out of LF
« on: February 22, 2010, 07:25:10 PM »
...terrible title i know,   but its monday and im tired.

Anyway...I have a very limited LF career, you could say a one trick pony..close up portraits of the wife and friends.   I had never really had the chance to experiment with a bit of rise and all that (still dont understand it as such) so I figured i would mess about with it,  see what it did.   This is first experimental go and I like it.   I need to get it out and about, Ive offered to take a few pics of mates band, so im thinking i might take this and see what happens!

I appreciate these wont win me any awards,   but given lack of opportunity and lack of time its a small victory  (for me anyway)

It is indeed.

I bought the small version for a fiver when I was in NY, then a few months later my friends bought me the larger version.

I'm with you damion... I've got LF camera but never tried anything diferent apart from self- portraits... I remember playing at the college few yeras ago with all the movements but that was it. I'm planning (again) this summer to go out and take more pictures and hopefully do what you're doing now.  I like your shots and is a really good start !

Just found this,  seems ideal.

A PDF of all the movements and applications.

it's great to hear you're branching out with the LF Damion - and an excellent guides-heet link there too. You're making me jealous now.

Its great fun,   very slow and measured in comparison - but thats good -makes you think about it all a bit more.

I hope to get out and about a bit with it shortly.  I just need some good weather or time out when its sunny.

My plan is (i think) to offload some old gear  - a spare 600SE, epson 2400 printer,  fuji s5 , maybe even the arax 88 etc  and buy a nice field camera.

I still have on Imageshack the quick reference guide I scanned for Ed a while ago. Here are the links:

I think it could be a nice addition to the PDF file you found... it came from an old Calumet photo catalog from  1992.
I hope you find it useful.

If distortion is what you're after,  so it's better stay away from this:

Also called the "hinge rule" The Scheimpflug principle is a great way of getting the sharpest possible picture using a LF camera, It was created by the Austrian Theodore Scheimpflug

And what an amazing coincidence that his surname was the same as the rule he discovered.

I still wonder if he could pronounce his name backwards without writing it down first  :P
