Fiddle with my snap
« on: September 20, 2009, 11:14:43 AM »
Hi all,

Ages ago I posted to suggest once in a while someone post a slightly larger snap, and ask people to titivate or fiddle with it and then all post their attempts (a bit like that "The Printer's Art" that features Leon) and interpretations of the snap.

Never one to be deterred by a deafening silence  ;D attached is as large an image as the website will allow.
Loch Fyne.  Leica m6 and 50mm lens.  Ilford Pan F+

Please feel free to download it and fiddle in Photoshop.

(Probably best to post results as the usual 500 pixels wide.)

See if we can get some responses by the end of the month?

Sound like a plan?  ???

good Idea ChopperT

Is there any detail in the rock shadows on the negative (looks like there might be)?  Any chance you could re-scan to keep that in the file, otherwise it's going to be tricky to do anything other than a silhouette type pic - fine in itself, but a bit limiting for interpretation.

ignore that Chops - I was looking on my laptop - there is plenty of detail there.  Working on it now.

I fiddled. The first image has had a basic curve applied to flatten the contrast a bit to bring out the detail in the rock.  Also, I levelled the horizon and cropped accordingly.  Image 2 has had various digital dodging and burning applied to change the contrast/ detail and had a warmtone applied.  All manipulation was done using Gimp on OS X Snowleopard.  I've over-sharpened it a bit - apologies, I'm not used to the USM in Gimp yet.

Alright then...I'll play along too. Using Picnik. A little of this and that. I'm waiting for Sean to chime in...haha.

my meager attempt..using Silver Efex Pro software...I like the darkness of the clouds but then lost the beauty of the rocks in the foreground...

I'd foolishly  :D thought everyone could work hard and take at least one thread seriously!

Sean - it's amazing what lurks in the shadows!

Here's my own (serious) example.

Maybe we could do this regularly, once a week/fortnight?  Someone different starting the thread each time.

With optional p**s-taking!  ;D

Good Idea heres my attempt.

A curve on the sky and a custom brush dodge on the rock.

I guess I went probably a bit overboard with layers...
A few sun rays, good looking rock, brown tone toner and a bit a work on the curves to make everything nice... probably spent too long fixing it  ;)

Sean, I'm interested in your version; how did you apply the tint?

I've never been one for 'big lump of rock in foreground' type pictures...
