What to do in Brighton?
« on: May 07, 2009, 09:07:17 PM »
A bit OT I know, sorry, but I think there's at least a couple of people here who might be able to help.

It's been decided that, for the mother-in-law's 75th, we're taking her to Brighton for a couple of days at the Grand (I've lost contact with the perps who tried to blow it up when Maggie was there or I'd invite them back to mark the occasion with a bang - only kidding - just).

Anyway, the plan is the wife looks after her mother while I get time to go take some piccies, or do something else rather more interesting. I know the more common parts of Brighton but was looking for ideas of any less well known, photographically interesting, places. Maybe interesting subjects or galleries etc. I'm only going to be able to get a few hours to myself at any one time so won't be able to travel far.

Any ideas appreciated.

If you fancy some street photography head for the north lanes and kemptown etc.

Peter - when are you going to be visiting? If it's before the end of May, the Brighton Festival and Fringe Festival will be on, so there's lots to do and see. Take a look at the websites:

http://www.brightonfestival.org

http://www.brightonfestivalfringe.org.uk

You could call it the Anish Kapoor festival this year, as he seems to have a monopoly on pretty much everything that's going on. I would recommend a walk to the Chattri - a memorial to Sikh and Hindu soldiers who died in Brighton during the First World War - where one of the Kapoor sculptures is on show. http://www.black-history.org.uk/chattri.asp

It's an interesting place to go even without the added interest of the sculpture, and a very pleasant 20-minute walk across some fields to get there.

The artists' open houses are some of the best things about the festival - not for the quality of the art, which is often pretty naff, but for the opportunity of poking around some truly gorgeous houses and gardens!  :D

I agree with sausage100uk - if street photography's your thing, then the North Laine is probably your best bet. If you want more seascapey stuff, head east on the Undercliff Pass, past the Marina, towards Ovingdean where there are lovely rockpools at low tide (and a very nice cafe on the prom!). For a bit of industrial scenery, go west to Shoreham Harbour. For views across Brighton, go north on the Ditchling Road, park at Hollingbury Golf Course and walk up onto the hill fort, http://matt.pope.users.btopenworld.com/hollin/Hollinhome.htm. On a good day you can see as far as the Isle of Wight.

Hope that helps! Have fun.  :)

Cheers Ailsa. I copied and pasted all of that as I'm off there in August.

Undercliff pass, rockpools, industrial scenery - I better buy a lot of film!

Thanks Ailsa. It will be end of this month so I might catch some of the festival things. Knowing me though, it'll be east to Ovingdean and west to Shoreham and maybe the North Laine.
