late start weekend thyread -17/18/19 May
« on: May 18, 2024, 05:40:10 PM »
Surprisingly nobody has started the weekend thread yet so I'll jump in.
I tried a Cyanotype but my newish Epson home  printer wont print on to acetate, so I had to use the negative directly onto the paper

I was thinking of starting the weekend thread earlier today, but something popped up. Two shots from a walk around Stavanger with a wide lens.

I'm really surprised it can't do it. On my cheap HP, I just tell it that I'm printing on matte photo paper so that it lays the most ink down and just feed it some inkjet transparencies (making sure that it prints on the rough absorbant surface).

Are you printing inkjet on acetate? I had mixed results depending on the brand of inkjet slide. There are some cheaper brands that don"t hold the ink very well and smear or get sticky.

I got a bunch of IBM branded sheets of inkjet compatible acetate at a garage sale.
You have to make sure it says Inkjet on it as they are completely different from those for laser.
They have a rough texture on one side that holds the ink. It takes a while for the ink to dry on those so you have to leave them out in the open for quite some time before using them.

I had a quick look. I got good results with Pictorico inkjet acetate (very expensive) and PPD acetate (much more affordable, but only available up to A4 format). With Label Ocean inkjet acetate had a bad experience. It just doesn't hold enough ink for a decent negative an got all sticky.

It could be that the surface is reacting with the ink. I had something similar happen to me with my old Epson and Polaroid branded paper.
I really have to see if I can't get some for cheaper from Aliexpress...

A bit late, but didn't get a change to do some printing until last night.

Spent an entire roll of film on this fallen but living tree near my home.

Ran a test roll through a belOMO Etyud camera I cleaned and repaired:

I got enough good photos from the roll of the tree that I'm going to go back and print 11x14 on about 1/3rd of the roll. Really want to hang some up around the house. Mostly printed 3.5x5 last night with a few 5x7 prints of the tree.

The acetate is what I used in a previously in a canon printer a few years back so I know it's not that,  and on the Epson website it does say

"If transparencies are not listed in the driver and plain paper + 360dpi/Text is selected, these settings are not guaranteed if the printer does not list Ink Jet Transparencies as a supported media in the 'Paper Specifications' or 'Paper Handling' section of the user guide and printer problems could arise e.g. ink on the rollers or paper feed problems."

I am using rebranded epson inks from Tescos so when they are used up, I'll try true epson ink.

I'm using an ink refill kit I found on Amazon.
It's branded Cocadeex and has been quite reliable so far. While it's definitely not pigment based at that price, it does work surprisingly well.
