Printer for Digital Negs
« on: January 17, 2008, 05:47:44 PM »
I need to replace my Epson C86 with something similar and cheap. Any suggestions for something that can also do digital negatives? I was using 3rd party mono inks from MIS Associates in the US which produced really good prints for the money but it looks like Epson has won an injunction against 3rd party ink suppliers. I didn't try digital negs with it.

I'm sure I'm not alone here in airing this rant but I just worked out the price of  Epson ink per litre based on a 220ml K3 cartridge at a whopping ?265.68 (?58.52 per cartridge x 4.54).

Long live the darkroom!

and that's pound sterling, so over in the US getting on for 500 bucks a litre although I'm sure you don't have the privilege of paying our special British prices

You might want to look at the HP printers that use Vivera ink. It's a pigment based ink with very good life. I know many recommend Epson for printing but I figured it might be a good idea if some hacking is to be done to use the HP. If you wreck the print heads, you've just lost a cartridge, not the whole printer... but that's just my 2 cents worth.

I hear that Lyson and Permajet continous ink systems save over a third on costs (Epson printers) generally. I have also been told that Fotospeed's inks have similar miraculous properties too.

I also recollect hearing some-where that if you have a problem with your printer malfunctioning, it is a good idea to keep the original ink cartridges and put them back in if you have a break down etc. - That way your warranty is not invalid...

But that is only a rumour of course.

MIS still sells the Ink and refill kits. The only thing they can not do is import new carts that are not made by epson. They can and will however sell everything you need to to refill any carts that you already have
