Please; is there a decent photo mag in the UK?
« on: March 22, 2008, 03:59:27 PM »
I'm looking for a mag to subscribe to that is film-based but will perhaps include paper negs, cyanotypes and other alt printing and is not full of digital and advertorials.
Would welcome suggestions.

I'd be happy to be proved wrong, but I don't think such a beast exists - in the UK or not.  B&WP is probably the closest to what you describe.

I agree, B&W seems to be the only one with anywhere near a film based approach, about 50/50 film and digital I think.
Maybe filmwasters could start one?  ;)

I have subscribed to Lenswork as i got a bit fed up with B&W the UK version,  B&W has gone a little stale recently, its  got a bit more like AP rather than the portfolio based magazine it once was.  Lenswork is US based and postage is dear but I hope it will be worth it.

Just thinking maybe this is something Ilford  could get into, a international  portfolio based magazine, a great way to promote their products. Anyone suggest a  good experienced editor!

Well, there is one filmwaster that occasionally roams these pages that could do an excellent job ;)

How can she resist the will of the people? Give us what we want....er, please. I can guarantee 10-20 sales per issue. Can't beat a dependable base like that.

 ;)

In all seriousness though; is there a magazine in the world (let alone the UK) that does what Andrea wants?

B+W Photography is probably the best in the UK I think. It's where I first read about filmwasters! I don't know if an entirly film based magazine exists any more - but there's tons of it on the web...

I'll do it - as long as some multi-millionaire benefactor stumps up the cash, doesn't interfere, and doesn't make me attend pointless three-hour meetings the day before going to press!  ;D

i find the reproduction lacking a little in silvershots. and the articles are a bit underwhelming too -  a good stab none-the-less.  Ag used to have some excellent alt process articles, but I dont know what it's like these days - it went too digi for my tastes a few years back - things might have changed though.  I'm looking too Andrea - let me know if you find anything that fits the bill

Oi! Quit your moaning and get back to the coal face, McWhinnie. Somewhere along the line you seem to have stumbled across the wholly incorrect notion that work is supposed to be enjoyable, fulfilling and something you do on  your own terms.

Wrong!

Heres a thought, and just a thought, but why not have a kind of magazine on the filmwasters web site to go with the pod cast?
An electronic one, people could send in articles, pictures etc for free, kind of self generating in that way.  Know nothing about it, but if enough people are interested maybe it could work? Could even charge a small subscription to help cover labour costs?  Im sure those of us on here fed up with the all digital mags would pay and maybe help contribute   :)

Hello,

Not solely dedicated to film but, save your pennies and buy Ag magazine.

I thought I'd gone potty when I first spent twelve quid on a magazine, but it's fab.

The editor (Chris Dickie) is hilarious, the work is great and not an advert in sight!  Bliss.

The only downside is that you end up not putting it down once it drops through the door.

They often have it at large Waterstones.

Have a look at their website http://www.picture-box.com/

Focus, B&W, Silvershots and Portfolio are quite good too, though a bit adverty and Focus and B&W are a bit Americany

Hope this helps,
