The first WHAT!?
« on: October 04, 2017, 04:35:02 PM »
I just got an email from Polaroid Originals all about the SX-70 and it made the claim that it was "The first ever folding camera." I hope that is hyperbole and not actual ignorance. They can't really think that, right?

There were many folding Polaroid Pack film and roll film cameras that came out before the SX-70.  I guess they could claim that they made the first folding integral instant camera.

It could be that some of their employees needs to brush up on the history of Polaroid, or maybe the three letters SLR was dropped on the floor. It was the first folding SLR and maybe also the last, at least up till now?

And it also was the world's most complex camera for a long time.
It was also the first camera to use an IC to time exposure.

Maybe... depends. Any camera with a brilliant finder is technically a 'reflex', so there were many folding SLRs before the SX70.  :)

My Bessa 6x9 and my Ansco 3a both have a single lens and a reflex finder. Are they SLRs? I'm not sure if the definition of SLR means that the view is necessarily through the taking lens, but it might be.

To win the title you need to have a camera with a single front lens element...
