CS1 and ManuelL visit the Peak District
« on: July 23, 2017, 07:30:26 AM »
A few weeks ago Christian and I visited the Peak District with our families for summer vacation. We stayed in Hope, a small village located in the northern part of the Peak District and took some nice day trips from there. Travellling with a 9 month old baby, I decided to leave my 4x5 field camera at home, but took my self built point and shoot and a Rolleiflext 3.5f. One of the highlights of the trip was of course meeting Irv b  :). We had a great day and posted the images already in a separate thread here: http://www.filmwasters.com/forum/index.php?topic=9276.0

As we were staying in Hope, I thought I start off the series with some shots I took around the village.

The next two shots were taken on a hike through Cave Dale.

Thanks Manuel for the nice start of this thread. :)

Next to my family I "accidentally" took more cameras with me than I intended. I originally only wanted to take my Canon F-1 (my "default" camera at the moment) and my Lipca Rollop TLR. However, for some strange reason there was still room in the box that I packed with the camera gear so I also stuffed my Zeiss Ikon Nettar 6x9 as well as my Agfa Synchro Box in there.

I was looking forward to this holiday a lot because I knew that the Peak District was full of wonderful sights and because I knew that Manuel and I had two weeks to indulge in filmwasting and in spending quality time with our families.

I'll also start off with our "base camp" in Hope. Almost all of the photos where taken on Fomapan 400 (both 120 and 135) which really is my favourite film at the moment. So unless marked otherwise, it's the film that I used. Most of the 135 shots where taken with a 2x orange filter.

Hope Valley is a wonderful location. It's close to Sheffield and also close to a lot of nice area of the Peak District. The following shot shows Hope Valley from Win Hill with the "omnipresent" concrete (?) factory in the background. It's probably been there before someone considered what its sight would do to the landscape. ;)

Win Hill is close to Hope and this is what you can see when you hike up there from Hope.

There're quite a number of train tracks running through the Peak and it's very likely that you will pass by or under some viaduct-like bridge with train tracks on top if you through the more populated Peak District.

Integral part of the landscape are sheep and cattle.

My 2nd set of images is from Sheffield. I have a bit of mixed memories about the trip to Sheffield as the bus driver didn't recognise us waiting at the bus stop in the evening and just drove past. Maybe our arms are to short and weren't sticking out enough. Due to this we had to wait two hours and the children had a late night out. We had some nice burgers during those two hours though.

Vampire selfie - I would have expected to see my reflection more clearly:

When we went to Sheffield I decided to shoot with the simplest camera that I had brought with me, the Agfa Synchro Box. No frills, just one exposure time, two apertures, that's it. Since it shoots with 1/30s it's easy to produce shaky results. So I stuck the Box onto a Gorillapod and I used a shutter release cable. Only the last shot was handheld, if I remember correctly. Since I only had Fomapan 400 film at hand, I pulled it two stops to EI 100 and developed it in Rodinal with the same time used for Fomapan 100.

The last shot was shot in Hope on a patch where sheep were grazing behind our cottage.

Thanks Irv. :) And yes, there's more to come. Here's another round of photos.

The Peak District is very rural in many places. To the pleasure of our kids we encountered a lot of sheep and friendly cows. Farm animal sightings are definitely a good way to keep kids entertained on hikes.

There's always one or the other curious cow trying to find out who those people are that wield strange clicking black boxes with glass cylinders screwed to them.

There're also places where you can see deer.

There's one sort of sport that many English people enjoy very much. It's called "hill walking". The objective of this sport is, as the name suggests, to walk up hills and to enjoy both the process of the walk itself as well as the view from the top of the hill. As with most other sports you can take this sport to many sorts of extremes. It's either the distance, the speed, the hight, the amount of hills or all of the above that make hill walking more or less difficult. The most extreme variant is probably the "fell race" which replaces "walking" with "running" and which to the uninitiated seems like a good and reliable way to a merciful faint. ;) But seriously, hill walking in the Peak District is very enjoyable and very well worth doing as much as possible. Mam Tor is one of the favourite hill walking destinations in the area where we stayed.

From the hill tops you have incredible views of natural and also artificial shapes and forms.

All of the above photos where shot with a Canon F-1 with various lenses on Fomapan 400 and on Fomapan 100.

Hello!!!

A wonderful set, thank you for sharing!! Hiking in Peak District with your favourite gear is great!
It also happened to me that I preferred black and white over color ... even en UK! Although your color examples are beautiful.

Congrats for the selection!

Un abrazo!
Antonio

cs1, you're getting some amazing results with Foma 400! I love the blown-out highlights in your first and (especially) third posts! I myself have never really had a lot of luck with Foma 400, I get decent results by shooting at 200 and developing in HC110 E. But nothing like yours! Cheers!

And Manuel, I really like your color shots! They give a nice vivid injection into the thread! :D

Thanks, Antonio, I'm glad that you like the series.

Satish, especially during and after our trip, the Fomapan 400 turned into my favourite film, especially the 120 format. When shooting landscape with 135 Fomapan 400, using an orange filter yields excellent results. I still find it unbelievable that such a cheap film shows such good results.

Thanks a lot for the comments! I really liked the Ektar 100 results from this trip. Sometimes Ektar is giving me a hard time, but this time it worked out nicely. :D
