Ren Hang, RIP

While he was often compared to Ryan McGinley (whose work I pretty much detest), I think Ren Hang's work had much more humor, curiosity, and wonder compared to other hot hipster photographers, many of whom just appear to imitate McGinley's shtick. It's very sad.

Far too young.
Everything should be tried once except incest and folk dancing.

I really like his work. Given his background and the political context in which he lived, I found his work to be apolitical - just full of fun, humour and connection with friends (who were invariably his models, rather than professional models).

A very sad death, for a man whose life was full of sadness, despite the humour he often brought to his work.

I'd never heard of this chap previously but he was clearly a good photographer with more than a hint of wit about him.  I'm sorry whenever the photographic community loses anyone with talent and something interesting to say.

Was a photographer I only knew of, but whose work I never had actually looked at until I heard they died. Very sad to read the possibility of suicide. People often don't know just how much they will be missed or how much better things could've gone for them if they stayed around.

Short notice, I know, but if anyone is in Stockholm next week, I can recommend visiting the exhibition at Fotografiska http://fotografiska.eu/en/utstallningar/utstallning/human-love/ . It's small, well curated and rather moving. If you are heading to Sweden this summer after the Ren Hang exhibition, Fotografiska is a must-see gallery, great cafe & restaurant on the 5th floor with a view over the water & part of the old town. Take a camera! Get to the cafe early if you want a window seat - there are very few.
