Topic: Au Premier Plan Pinhole - any experience?

Hi,

I have recently come accross the Au Premier Plan Pinholes page and find the design with off-center pinholes quite interesting. The images from the 6x17 look very sharp. I am wondering if anyone here has one of their cameras and is willing to share some impressions. I heard the quality is very good and only loading the film can be tricky on the 6x17.

Not me. I also find gorgeous the sharpness of the images published in their web - maybe the great idea to curve the film plane is responsible for that.

On a pinhole, sharpness is actually fixed by the size of the pinhole and nothing else.
The curved plane is there to even out exposure.
It simply guarantees that the pinhole to film distance is always the same. This prevents light fall off.

As for loading, my dad built me a 6x17 curved plane pinhole and loading it is quite something. Thing is you need two posts to turn the film so that it hugs the film guide right away. So you need to bend the tip of the backing paper to slide it under the posts.

A curved film plane does not affect sharpness, but does minimise vignetting. But a curved film plane plays havoc with your horizontals if camera not exactly levelled. Which is most likely why they have added the second pinhole. Will give a spot if rise, allowing a change of perspective without ruining a straight horizon.

I was looking at their slideshow and something struck me as weird.
Why is there a clothespin on the inside right side of the camera?

Jimmy Guerin is a regular over on F295. Nice guy, good photographer and a very good camera designer/maker. If I had the $ and was any good at pinhole photography, I wouldn't hesitate to pick up one of these.
