Flickr - For Sale?
« on: March 30, 2016, 01:52:34 PM »
Just spotted this.  Not necessarily bad news, as I think most of us have had our issues with Yahoo / Flickr down the years and a good shake up / improvements to layout / functionality might be a good thing.

However, it will be interesting to see who bids / buys and what their intentions might be when it comes to content....

I haven't touched flickr in ages.  every time I need to login i have to go via the helpdesk as they made me unlink my old email address, create a new yahoo account and now keep restricting my password.   lets hope someone buys it and sorts it out.

I know I'd hate to see it go the way of the dodo like so many other sites before.
But if it were to be bought by Facebook I'm not sure I'd be staying there.

That would be indeed the worst case and I'm already thinking about deleting my account. Once the kraken embraces you with his arms, your soul is sold.

Thankfully, I have very little posted on Flickr, I'm an infrequent visitor and, as a result, I'm not remotely reliant on it from any perspective, really.  In fact, over the past couple of days I've come to the realisation that entering my user name and password is actually more hassle that any benefit I derive from actually having an account.

I hope Flickr becomes something that people are happy with and want to use but I'm looking at a couple of other options to build a website and post what photos I want onto the interweb - so I very much doubt I'll have a Flickr account this time next month.

They kept screwing up the UI. Each iteration after Yahoo took over got worse and worse.

It was great in it's day. So much activity, and actually it is still a very good resource. Groups for instance which discuss particular equipment, techniques and so on.

But I hate using it now, I can't quite leave, but I haven't posted in a long time, and much less frequently than I used to.

Horses for courses.  I still use Flickr since a wide range of very useful contacts also use it.  It has become less useful, but it is not useless, not yet.

The trouble with Flickr is that is doesn't have enough selfies.

That's what the interweb is all about these days.  Selfies.

I put a lot of photos on Flickr still and I use the groups as a rich knowledge base for almost everything photo-related. The UI changes have been irritating, but we adapt. I don't know anywhere else that gives a TB of free storage. I tried Ipernity, but that UI was worse and I ran out of free storage in very short order, even storing images of moderate resolution. Besides, iPernity is blocked at work whereas Flickr is not. If anyone knows of a site that has Flickr's up-side without any of its down-side, I am all ears. Posting on my own dedicated web site is fine, but I don't get any interaction there. I am starting to use Google+ more these days. There is some good activity in the Film and Analog Photography Community. I hope Flickr doesn't go away or start charging for what is now free. If they maintain the status quo, I'll probably keep storing my photos there indefinitely.

It's very easy to migrate your photos to Ipernity.  I find the storage useful (but I did buy a "pro" subscription).  And I like the simplicity of its function.  And it isn't blocked at my place of employment (can you get it unblocked?).  And Reinhold is over there too so I don't feel alone!  Only sayin'.

I would have to come up with a 'work-related' reason that I needed it unblocked since it is a file sharing site. I requested Flickr to be unblocked back before the rules got enforced.

I use Google Photos kind of like Photobucket, to share quick digi pics. I like to keep a clean profile on Flickr, so I don't mix them in. I suppose if I have to migrate someday, I'll purchase storage over on ipernity since I have a small selection of photos over there already. The loss of metadata is catastrophic though.
