If there's anyone here who's on Instagram and has any good film-user Instagram feeds to pass along, please do! Is anyone here on Instagram?

Thanks!

And by the way, on Instagram I am (surprise) GothamTomato.

Can you load scanned photos onto Instagram?

Yes, you can. What I do is make a scan and create a jpeg, then email it to myself. Then I open the email on my iphone and save it to the photo library. From there I can post it to Instagram.

There are probably other ways to do it but that's what I do.

How do you get non-square images to appear in their native format? I loaded a nice 35mm shot and Instagram cropped the hell out of it until it was square. That was my last upload to Instagram.

I think so. I think it's fun, and you can use it for whatever you'd like. Right now I'm posting images from a photo essay I did about a summer camp for children with Muscular Dystrophy. I'm posting just one or two images a day.

I've seen people use it to build an audience and then get book deals or commercial jobs. Or you can just use it to communicate visually or be inspired by other's work or whatever you make of it.

I like it that there are film photographers on there representing :)

There are two ways that I know of, but the one I use in an app called Instasize. You open the image in Instasize and it places your rectangular image in a square. You can shift it around in the square or add text if you like (or even put multiple images in that square), then you export it into Instagram. It's very simple. I'm not a techie at all and I was able to download it, open it up and use it right away.

Also, with updated versions of Instagram you can do it right within the app. I've never tried that though.

I follow you gothamtomato. I also follow a lot of film photographers. I sometimes post film work by uploading it to Flickr, then download it to the iPod, and then onto Instagram.

Im blkrcat on instagram btw.

Here's what I do, far easier.

Scan image. Do adjustments and prep for web. I always resize to 1750 on the widest or 1750 high for portrait. If its square I leave it if its 35mm I end up just making it square in photoshop. Change your canvas size. Match the height to the width (or vice versa if portrait), set your background to whatever color you desire, the common color is white.

Upload to google drive, download it from that on your phone and post directly to instagram from your gallery or photos.

It's not hard at all.

The current version of the app allows native aspect ratio.

My process is to scan, then connect my phone to my computer via usb, drag-and-drop, then post.

My handle is indofunksatish. I also have an account for my band: thenevermindorchestra. I don't post very often on either :-\

Oh, also, for interesting feeds to follow:

impossible_hq (guess who that is?)
thefamilyacid (Roger Steffens' photos, posted by his daughter by Kate Steffens. Mostly [exclusively?] Kodachrome scans)
workforbillc (Bill Cunningham's assistant photog)
cinestillfilm (again, betcha can't guess who :) )
myspacetom (yes, THE MySpace Tom. He's a pretty damn good landscape photographer)
dguttenfelder (David Guttenfelder, NatGeo photog)
itswetpaint (don't know who this is, but s/he takes interesting architecture photos)
hakimbolism (a Singaporean who takes mixed film and digital photos. No, Peter, not THAT Singaporean)
swopes (a surprisingly young, but good, pro photog from Chicago. At least she looks very young in her selfies)
13thwitness (a Brooklynite, I believe? He takes pretty dramatic [ie, stereotypical] photos)
sax_and_noise (again, don't really know who he is, but he lives in Russia and takes a lot of grainy photos of musicians on HP5+)
andy_koes (again, don't know her, but some of her photos are interesting. Others are typical teenage girl photos)
beowulfsheehan (a friend of mine, photographer of the stars, literally. I mean, like sports, music, and literary stars, not the literal stars. So, fine, I guess I mean the figurative stars.)
thecelebsnapper (don't know him/her, takes lots of pictures of cars for those of you who like that kind of stuff)
skwii (a Finnish guy who takes interesting landscapes and other photos of Finland)
manishgosalia (another friend of mine, an official NY Jets photog, but his passion is live music photography, and that's what most of his instagram photos are of)
theyshootfilm (no explanation needed ;) )

Oops! Just saw the "film-centric" note above. So I guess only impossible_hq, thefamilyacid, cinestillfilm, hakimbolism, sax_and_noise, and theyshootfilm qualify.

I'm all over Instagram and use it daily. It's my one regular social media hang out spot. I use it occasionally for film stuff (always tagged #filmwasters and #filmisnotdead), but mainly for family snaps for my folks to look at. I follow a glorious gaggle of fellow Filmwasters.com people already (Jack Johnson, Phil 'Buttocks' Bebbington, Leon, Sean, Nigel, Chris Fraser, Moiz, Rob Schneider, Damion, Susan Burnstine etc.) and really enjoy seeing their work on Instaspam (if that's what they post there), or getting a view of their lives outside of photography.

Notable film-centric Instgram accounts are @theadamgoldberg (https://www.instagram.com/theadamgoldberg/) whose photography and acting chops have been mentioned here before and @exphotographer (https://www.instagram.com/exphotographer/) who is someone I know nothing about, but whose work I adore. She posts newer digital phone work alongside archive film material (about a 50/50 split) mainly portraits from what looks like the 19670's.

@treypentecost
@blackandwhiteisworththefight
@laurencewattsphoto
@m6expired
@thedarkroomlab
@streetphotographers
@filmneverdie
@killindreams
@adamdegross

These are a few I enjoy. There are so many film shooters on here and that's pretty refreshing. Instagram also seems like a goddamn load of spammy crap for the most part so when I run across some quality stuff it makes me pretty happy. I just wish it wasn't so mobile dependent. It'd be nice to be able to post high quality images from a desktop. oh yeah, I'm @Arrowtop on instagram.
