too much dead pig in them

Wow, your wagon wheels have dead pig in them! Makes me hungry just thinking about that. Ours just have dead corn, refined flour and probably wax.

MoonPies are great, except the banana flavored ones.
Is there any good artificial banana flavor available in the world?
Somehow, it never tastes right... especially the banana flavored antibiotics I had as a child. The first taste would send your tastebuds into a panic and the aftertaste was so bad I still remember it!

Butyl ester is cheap and easy to make. If you tell someone it smells/tastes like banana, it is close enough to fool them.

I might be wrong on that Mike ... But I beleive the mallow centre has pork gelatine in it.   I don't eat that. I'm happy for it to be smeared on acetate and soaked in silver nitrate though :)

Yes, gelatin is usually made from animal byproducts, cows & pigs being the main source of those byproducts. Kosher / Parve gelatin I believe come from a fish source. There is also gelatin made of agar agar - I have seen "healthy" snack cakes made from that stuff.  I was thinking you might have meant lard which was used in cream filling at one point.

I wonder, is there such a thing as vegan photographic film?

I think the answer is no. For me the worst was artificial watermelon flavour. On what planet does watermelon taste like that stuff?

I think Polyester film would be vegan but I'm not sure of the source of all the chemicals that go into.  Used more for film projection that shooting stills.

Welcome, Mike! Although I've now stopped listening to the FPP (no time for podcasts anymore) I did listen to the first 100 episodes and I think my camera was the second to be given away :)

I think all gelatin used in film comes from animals apparently the complex sulphurs actually make the film more sensitive by about 10 fold the Kodak herd were fed on hot plants mustard and horseradish I think.
The photo scientist C.E.K Mees was known to joke if cows didn't like mustard we couldn't go to the movies...
There's more to this photography thing than meets the eye.

That's not a whippet ... That's a 'Tunnock's Teacake'!

I just wanted a like button, but as there isn't one I quoted. Tunnocks Tea Cakes are Ambrosia.

That was such an interesting tidbit I had to google it -- I thought it was pretty funny that the first search result was your blog. It is good BTW, never looked at it.

I think the second link was to an old  Popular Science article (page 129 "Wonder Stories in the Making").

My dad, who was an old school chemical engineer (back in the 'better living through chemistry' days) told me that pig gelatin was used in a lot of processes that he was involved in, so clearly gelatin is not gelatin. It is cool that you can even further dial in parameters by what the critters are eating!

And no, the polyester film is not going to be vegan-friendly as it is not the base that has gelatin in it, the gelatin layer sits atop of it holding all those lovely bits of silver.

That's really interesting and would make sense. There's been a long tradition in animal husbandry to feed animals specific things to alter their meat or byproducts for different results. Humans, we're such cruel bastards.

If we had a foodwasters.com I'd be first in line (I spend A LOT of time thinking about food) but frankly you shouldn't waste food ;D.

We actually had a foodwasters for a while. It was more of a recipe exchange than anything and it was sadly very under-utilized.

Today I did succumb to some valentines treats. I got a tumbler with jelly hearts, those powdery heart candies with a message on them, some cinnamon hearts and some red and white jellybeans... Classic and still the best!
