"If you don't know how to handle negatives...."
« on: October 20, 2015, 01:18:11 AM »
I'm scanning some 35mm negs from Saturday night, and I came up with a slightly more efficient way to get them out of the holders and get the next set of negs into the holders. Which prompted me to think "if you don't know how to handle negatives, you have no business being a film photographer." But then it occurred to me that the first half of that statement could be applied to life, thusly: "If you don't know how to handle negatives, you have no business interacting with people."

Or something.

How would you finish that phrase?

"If you don't know how to handle negatives..."

What came immediately to mind was less a completion than a response: "Always with the negative waves, Moriarty, always with the negative waves. Why can't you say something righteous and positive for a change?" (Bonus points if you get the reference without consulting the Googles. Even more bonus points if you know the proper response. Double secret bonus points if you can name the actors in the scene.)
Any man who can see what he wants to get on film will usually find some way to get it;
and a man who thinks his equipment is going to see for him is not going to get much of anything.

Well it's gotta be a Sherlock Holmes reference. Has anyone else in the history of literature or movies ever named a character Moriarty? But other than that, I got nothing...

Ok, I just Goggled it. Apparently someone other than A.C. Doyle HAS indeed named a character Moriarty :P

I remember Kelly's Heros and Donald Sutherland but no idea who played Moriarty or what his response was.

Gavin Macleod, later to become Captain Stubing of "Love Boat" fame. His response was simple and appropriate: "Crap."

So are you going to tell us how or are you going to keep us in suspenders.  :o

Nothing earth-shattering  ;D just pop it up from underneath and grab it. The difference is that now I can do it with one hand. I think it increases my efficiency by a full millisecond  :o

Holding the holder (answers the question: "Who holds the holder?")

Aw jeez. I thought you were talking about 'sleeves' this whole time. Now a more efficient way of getting negs in and out of sleeves would be much appreciated. I try to hold them by the edges, but inevitably they bend and I finger print them. I know... "wear gloves". But I find the lack of sensation daunting when trying to do a tactile task like sliding a neg into a sleeve.

Among my various superpowers is the fact that I have no fingerprints. By which I mean, my skin is so damn dry that there's virtually no oil on any surface of my body, so I can touch negs with impunity and they will be none the worse for wear. I still try to handle them delicately, by the edges, but (and I guess I'm kind of negating the whole purpose of this thread) I can handle negatives however the **** I want to :)

Oh, there's no oil on the surface of my body, but there's plenty of dry skin. So the dust problem in my apartment is unimaginably bad. Consider fingerprints my superpower; dust my kryptonite :)

I'm feeling like I'm reckless when it comes to handling my negs!
Never used gloves. I try and handle by the edges but it doesn't always work out. I tap them in when friction becomes too much.
I know some people who used to use some rubber fingers from the drugstore...

The last two batches of 35mm I developed, I managed to drop a roll onto the floor right out of the tank.  >:(

I've never used any gloves to handle negs before developing them.  The next time I touch the negs is after they've been rinsed and I've always found that my fingers are as good as any squeegee when getting excess water off them.   I always try to only open the tank containing negs over a clean sink - just in case of any mishaps.  Once dried, I still don't use gloves but I do make sure my hands are clean before handling negs (cutting to length and putting in scanner holders).  Conversely, I always used to use rubber gloves when I had an enlarger and produced prints.

I suspect this became accepted logic from the guy who taught me how to do the basics when I was a teen.
