I've seen renders that good that are ACTUALLY CG.

As a 3d generalist VFX and compositing falls into my lap a lot more than most tasks. I think with some time I could recreate those scenes in 3D and get them pretty close. They are simple. His render times however "I left this overnight" is bogus.

Anyways I put together some mediocre comps that I did last year. I wont post the image on FW because its quite OT and Leon probably will kill us all but the link is here:

Realistic images like that are not exactly new. A few years ago, the editors at the Ikea catalog were complaining to their graphic artists and photographers that some of the pictures were not as good as they would have liked. And as an example of a good picture, they pointed to a set of photos they really liked without knowing they were all CGI. The graphic artists thought it was quite funny :)
