TinTin went to the Desert.
« on: October 01, 2014, 05:00:54 AM »
Welp I have returned Sunday night from my trip. I wish it would have been longer as I didnt shoot nearly as much as I thought I would. Likely better to have brought more film though then not enough. Here's Pt.1 of 3 that I have processed and scanned. I'm sorry for any repeated compositions, I'm just kind of throwing everything up there that I liked.

Also, I hate scanning Portra 160. Worst film for scanning hence why my color isn't super perfect.

One of the first stops we did just past Lake Mead in Nevada

Trying to blend in

The rental for the week, she had a little over 3000 more miles after we were done with her.

I'm not a Breaking Bad fan since I haven't seen the show but apparently this Dam is important. Albuquerque.

Me trying to get "Philly" on the trip

An abandoned motel we drove past, had to get those colors.

An abandoned restaurant

Outside the local Bar

Drove past this twice, love this truck. We did get quite the stink eye from the locals here.

Driving out to Ship Rock without getting stuck.

We were filming a lot of the trip as well.

I guess this is a self portrait

Ship Rock. We were hoping for something a little more dramatic but the colors are nice at sunset.

Shy Van

Getting "Philly" again!

More to come. I still have another half roll in the Pentax I gotta kill which should have images from White Sands as well as a couple other neat locations. I also have about 4 or 5 rolls to process from the M5.

Are you using an ND filter? You're getting some pretty narrow DoF in really bright light. I like the effect!

Here's a select favourites from my night in Las Vegas. Love that Portra 400. BTW these are 35mm.

Kicked things off with $4 Hotdog, shot, and beer

Trying some Neon

Can't get over the amount of lanes on the strip

1/15th at F1.1, didnt expect this to turn out. Especially with the articles from shot #1

Cheap cab ride home as it rained us out to end our night in Vegas

Oh. Damn. That cab shot is killing me. Most beautiful thing I've seen in weeks? Months? Years? So good.

Film is magic. Everything comes out ... whether you can actually use it is another question, but everything somehow comes out...

Thanks Indofunk! The cab shot was quite a surprise. I didn't realize how many lights were actually in the background of my shot! Looks like the image got explored too

Thanks Fluminian, Still more to come.

In no particular order

We stopped off at the VLA (Very Large Array) to snag some shots of the Dishes they use to watch space

Filming as we went along

One of many cool old Car Lots we saw on the trip

My favourite photo from the trip. I knew this one was going to be good the second I took it.

This was our road we had to take the rental car on out to ship rock. We ended up parking halfway and hiking it because we didn't want to be left stranded in the middle of nowhere with no cell reception

Our first stop and my first walk out in the barren landscape. It was hot.

I love the night shots on Portra and the black and white of the road to ship rock.  I went down a lot of rough roads like that in Arizona and had to get out and hike a few times.  What were you filming with?  I usually shoot Regular 8mm and Super 8 but that camera looks more modern.

Quite modern. Its an HVX-200. Not my camera though, I was shooting film the whole time!

Really like the whole series. The low depth of field shots are magical.
Love the VLA shot (got a thing for telescopes).

I so adore this whole series! Really fantastic color in all the shots, and all of them have such character and feeling. I'm getting itchy for some Southwest travel!

Thanks Limr, Manuel, and BAC.

Keeping the fun times going with another quick set of images.

I have to say it was hard to resist buying some fire crackers since we get hardly any of those shenanigans in Canada.

We also found this ass on the side of the road

I assume a sand beetle(?) is walking through white sands

Teaser for the color version that I hope turns out

White Sands in Color. One of the most impressive sunsets I've ever seen.

Quick portrait snap with the sun setting behind

I got quite used to American fast food. We don't have anything like this in Canada anymore.

Seemingly abandoned Truck and House

Another sunset as we worked our way home from a day of driving.

V E R Y  NICE!

It's always cool to see photos taken by others of places I am very familiar with and see often.  It's like seeing my state with new eyes and from angles and perspectives that are refreshing.

Glad you liked it out here and was nice to put a face to the name.

show us more!!!   8)

Fantastic!

This thread is a bit like a like watching a good TV series, when you can't wait to see how the story continues next week.  ;D

Ya they are great. I like a wide range of them but the roadside shots in colour such as the abandoned motel and restaurant are some of my faves.

Manuel, the series can keep going! I have quite a bunch of images I would love to share. Just tell me when to stop!  :P

Don, I'm glad you like the abandoned stuff. We really don't get enough of that in Ontario. I'm not sure if thats a good thing or not but the grunginess and texture you get from natural weathering is amazing. Its always something I'm trying to emulate in my professional 3D work to make things look more realistic. It's very beneficial to see the real deal close up.

Thanks Becky! Likewise, it was great to put a face to the name. I really enjoyed new mexico. I do have to say that it did change my life a little bit. I would return back in a heart beat. Ask and you shall receive!

Here's an alternate angle of some previous posted images. This was one of my favourites from the trip.

We went for adventure and got it. Here's where we got our rental car stuck in the sand.

And here's where we subsequently ended up sleeping because we couldn't get anywhere with the car in the dark. Closest town was Page AZ, but we were At Lone Rock, Utah.

Look at the curves on that sign!

Really impressive set this. Much as I like B/W, I too am smitten with the new Portra. The 400 really is the bee's knees, overexpose, underexpose one or two, or at times even three stops? It takes it.

I'm with you 100% However not a huge fan of the 160, the 400 is spectacular. I sort of wish that I took the 400 along or ektar over the 160. But the price was right, live and learn.

What a great set of images. I really enjoyed looking through those. The black and white are of course very good indeed, but those colour are really superb. Thanks for sharing your trip. :)

I like the colors! I'd be happy with the film & scanning process here... Nice filmy tint without being obviously over processed or mis-processed. Very good. Skj.

Thank you Skorj. There's something about getting that "true" color that I love when scanning.
