Topic: Help with old bw film: Agfa Isopan ISS

I shot a 1945 expired roll of this film, just developed it and got some sweet negatives.
But the gelatine layer of the film has soaked and I think I need to get rid of it, but how?

I did a test, it can be rubbed off but I fear the risk of scratches. Any ideas or experiences?

I'm a bit puzzled since all film emulsions are made from gelatin.

Yeah. Don't scrape off the gelatine! That's where the picture is

It was a soaked layer, like the one you'll find with lith film. Anyone used it?
The one on lith film can be rubbed off real easy (with cold water from the tab), but on this film I needed hot (but not boiling) water.
No worries, the image didn't come off.

By the way, I did a pre-wash and the water coming out was green.

Yes, I think it was the anti halation layer. I never experienced this with roll film before.

Well, I know that remjet can be taken off using a solution of sodium carbonate... but it will also soften the emulsion and most probably strip it right out.

You could try to soak a wad of cotton with a sodium carbo solution and wipe the back of the film with it. Try and make sure that it doesn't go to the image side.

I think there was some info similar to this in the Kodachrome blue scale with caffenol thread, close to the transition between page 1 and 2 of the main forum.
