120 roll film TiTAN pinhole?
« on: October 20, 2013, 08:19:50 PM »
Hi all - some news that might be of interest ...

I was chatting with Mike Walker the other day, and the topic of the next possible member of the TiTAN pinhole camera family was raised (by me). Mike said he'd been thinking about a 120 panoramic version - 6x12 or similar. He reckoned he could produce the camera with its own integral and removable roll film holder, and darkslide so focal length cones can be changed mid-roll. Also, it could have some ability for adapting it for 5x4 too.

Sounds exciting, but I'm not sure about the 6x12 ratio? And, zero image seems to have the market cornered?

What do you reckon? Would you buy one? I suppose that would depend on price ... ?

Zero Image has a 4 x 5 and Titan made one of those, so I would assume they (Titan) could make the 6 x12 and find a market for it as well.

The Zero Image cameras are works of art, while the Titans are more utilitarian.   There's room for both.

 :)

there are a lot of different pinhole cameras for medium format. a few wooden ones and of course the holga pinhole wide.
but none have I ever heard to have that kind of modability. I say the market is ready for something more advanced! :)
specially if you can change cones mid roll.

also, the ability to shoot smaller formats would be good too. but more in the way that people might have a favorite aspect ratio. I much like the possebilities of 6x12... 6x9 is too normal in my eyes. but still, someone might want their 6x9, 6x7 or 6x6. 6x4.5 I find hard to beliave. then they wouldn't buy this camera. 6x6 might be a stretch -but still a nice offering.

anyhow, if I would buy one? maybe. being able to choose either 4x5 or medium format really makes it interesting in my eyes though.

btw, how to the other Titan cameras handle filters?

I agree with jojonas that 6x12 would be enticing. I have a 4x5 Zero Image, and while I love shooting with it and the results I get, I am in no way married to the brand. If a Titan came out that could shoot 120 with a long enough image to make it interesting I'd certainly consider getting one.

What made me go for the 4x5 Titan was the possibility to extend to longer focal lenghts (as oposed to shorter focal lenghts in the Zero). In this way the Zero and Harman 4x5 really complement each other. The Zero 6x12 is also very wide. Having a little longer focal length might be intersting for some. In my opinion a Graflok back for the already existing 4x5 Titan system could be interesting as it would give the option to use roll film as well as polaroid backs.

HI All, I've pointed Mike in the direction of this thread, so maybe we'll be playing a part in shaping this new project of his! Who knows.

Jojonas - there is no specific way of fitting filters, but I've jammed some red filter gel behind the pinhole in my TiTANs  - works very well. And contrast is much improved.

I have a love-hate relationship with my Holga WPC. It's awesome to shoot that wide (6x12), but a better build quality would be nice. And maybe someone sharper images? But I guess that's only possible with bigger film (like the 4x5). And filters. Yes! A filter thread would be nice (mostly for shooting IR). But I can do without it.

Ah. I kinda hoped that the next one would be a 7x5 - THE ideal format, well, at least for me..  :)

A roll film model would be great!

And a model with interchangeable film gates would be simply magic. Just imagine making multiple format images in the same camera :)
Some type of of light baffle is a nice added touch, definitely better than what's available on the market right now.

One thing I loved about the Diana Multi Pinhole is the presence of a viewfinder of some sort. Mike could go the route of something similar to the Graflex Sports finder with a simple frame and peep sight.

Filters would also be nice. Bubble level, and something magnetic for the shutter or something...

And make it affordable... the hardest part.

I agree, a roll film version would be a great option. Sheet film is fantastic but many of us would love a relatively cheap way of wasting 120 film in 6x9 or 6x12 format. I think Mike may have been the chap whose ear I was bending on this subject when Ilford was launching the Obscura at Photogtaphica in May. Nice chap and, if he can be convinced that 120 users can be "seduced" I don't see why it wouldn't make commercial sense.

A better quality version of the Holga WPC would entice me though I might go and stick a proper lens on it. Something with interchangeable cones would be ideal for hacking.
