The boys from Vienna are really on a roll!
« on: July 21, 2013, 10:28:49 PM »
I just got news that on Thursday 25th, the boys from Lomography will release yet again a new product!
It's still a big mystery as to what it will be but in their usual "try and guess what it is" style, they put a few clues on their website.

Here's the images:

and

I just hope it's going to be good and affordable!

The top image is the design for a Petzval isn't it?

That could be it when you look at today's hint.

But one question remains: this thing has to be attached to something!

I'd say a Petzval is a good guess.

What Lomo need to do is get with Holga and ask them to take that 90mm lens they have on their 6X12 and stick it on a "snapshot" 4X5.

Here are the specifications.

One piece, plastic 4X5 holder with the 90mm lens in a focusing mount for focus to 1 meter.
Four waterhouse stops f8-11-16-22
Shutter, 1/100 and 'B' with provision for standard cable release.
Standard 1/4-20 tripod thread on body.
Plastic optical viewfinder.
Price, with 1 4X5 film holder $100

In other words, an oversize Holga.

that would be a pretty simple camera to make up yourself, if you had a spare PanHolga around

Had that thought too but could not bring myself to spend $50 on a camera just to swipe the lens/shutter block. Besides, the shutter has no 'B' setting or cable release socket and a dedicated optical VF would be nice too. A 90mm lens on a 4X5 is quite wide, about equal to a 25~28mm lens on a 35mm full frame.

That sounds a lot like the Travelwide :) I wonder if you could mount the Holga lens ...

Not likely. The mounting surface of the TravelWide 90 is 89.5mm from the film. This means the 90mm one element Holga lens would just about have to be at the surface of the front plate. This would preclude mounting the whole thing with it's shutter block, you would not be able to get the lens back far enough to reach infinity.

I'm a backer on the TravelWide project and eagerly await delevery of a 90, I already have a lens ready and according to the latest update things are moving along nicely.

Sadly, I don't think they will. We do see the same rack & pinion focusing on old telescopes and microscopes...
It was also on old wooden box cameras from the Daguerreotype and wet plate eras.

For me, a brass focusing lens can only mean one thing: wooden box camera.
And being Lomography (as in they don't do wet plate), it also means it must include a shutter assembly!

Fair enough! I still have to source a 90mm lens. All lenses seem to have been bought up. I guess I'll wait some more until the craziness is over.

It's a Kickstarter for a Petzval lens to fit Canon EF and Nikon F mount.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lomography/the-lomography-petzval-portrait-lens

"The retail launch price of the lens is currently planned as $499/€499..."

Meep!

Only available in Nikon F and Canon EF mounts?
And $300?

Big hairy deal!

The boys from Vienna can just keep right on rolling as far as I'm concerned.

On the other hand, the 4X5 TravelWide project is moving along nicely, can't wait to get mine.

Here's the full promo video
http://vimeo.com/70744505#

I was expecting both a finished product, not a kickstarter. And at 350$ (all the low cost 300$ ones are already gone), it's a bit expensive for my taste.

I'm disappointed  :-\

I think its going to be a gorgeous lens, the price will probably keep me away though. Can't believe they need to use Kickstarter though. They got to be making money.

Not just the price, but no adaptability to other systems. Fixed Nikon or Canon mounts and thats it. There ARE other cameras out there. This should have been developed as a standard "T" mount.

Dosen't really matter. I could rig a two element, cemented achromat with waterhouse stops and an ABS plumbing fitting for focusing for far less that this thing. With all the field curvature and coma you would get all the 'swirly boke' you could handle.

You guys do realize that most digital users are canon and nikon right? looks to me like they are trying to branch out of the analogue world and get some of that digi honey out there.

edit* just watching the video now. Looks like the mount decisions are obvious to me.

I got a real one for under a 'hunge'

this is a lens for digital, the bokeh boys are going to love it

the Petzval lens 'look' is also the result of a narrow aperture on large format film, the look won't quite be there with 35mm film/digital

I use a petzval type lens design on M4/3rds and get very similar results

I can see the prices of original Petzval lenses rocketing from now... never managed getting one as it was expensive already, now it's going to be impossible.

Only a 44mm image circle. I was hoping for something a bit more large formatty. Though I can see why they would go 35mm business-wise.

it's nice looking, but too much moola (does anyone even say moola anymore?)
for what it is for me.

and true what Mauricio said about the price going up to impossible limits for Petzvels...

I don't think it will change prices much. Actual Petzval lens prices (Excluding things like old projector lenses) are already really high. Also original Diana prices nose-dived after lomography introduced the Diana+ so you never know.  If they saturate the market, prices might fall.

For that price, I can get a lot of lens for my money by shopping old surplus companies...

They must be doing something right! Just shy of £1,000,000 that's some impressive marketing for you.

That's one well produced video, with a bit of history in there, and shot on their prototype it seems.

I'm not surprised they've made that much, there are lots of 'pros' who have paid (or had their employers buy) lots for large Mb digital cameras with expensive lenses. $499 is not a lot considering the price of prime lenses from Nikon/Canon. I'm sure lots of those lust after something more retro/repro to add to their collection.

Definitely edging into the digital market with this one. If it helps in a roundabout way to promote film or their investment in other analogue developments that's great. I'm giving this a miss.
