The camera of my dreams: my washing machine

Yes, you've read correctly. The camera of my dreams is my washing machine.

I know, you must think I'm totally bunkers but I somehow think this is simply pure genius!
Some of you might know Steven Pippin (the British artist who invents totally useless things), well, I think he's the author of this one.

How To Make Good Pictures (Using Your Washing Machine) is the page.

Now if it could just help me make my whites a bit whiter ;)

That's brilliant! I'd try it, but unfortunately I don't have a front-loader!

I saw a series of washing machine pinhole photos in Seattle in 2001 - they were beautiful, taken inside a laundrette I think. Did you watch the video? Hilarious.

Last night, just before going to bed (with a very tired brain I might add), I came up with a single sentence that describes this very nicely:

Who needs a Polaroid when you can have a Maytag?

Look at it this way:
  • They both do instant prints.
  • They both attract the attention of people around you.
  • It's easy to find film for the washing machine.
  • It's easier to find parts and repair the washing machine.
  • The Maytag is a lot more reliable ;) (no comment on this one please)
Just imagine the face of the world famous appliance repair man if he ever gets called to repair your "instant camera" (at least worth more than a thousand words) :)
Well, OK, I wouldn't like to carry a big enough tripod for the Maytag  :D
Just imagine, after World Toy Camera Day and World Pinhole Photography Day, There could be World Front Loading Washing Machine Photography Day  ;D

(I could go on for pages...)
