Large format lens help
« on: April 18, 2007, 09:18:44 PM »
I (impulsively) bought a Nikon 210mm LF lens in a Sinar mount. However, I have a Toyo camera and am trying to assemble a low cost LF outfit. Doh. Blimmin' impulses.
Does anyone have experience of large format lenses and can I dismantle the lens from the mount and put it in a Toyo mount?

I know I have a Schneider on a Burke&James board and it can easily be removed. It has a large nut on the back that can be loosened with a spanner wrench (or carefully with a flat head screwdriver like I once did).
You should have no problem changing the board.
Boards are fairly cheap and you can sometimes find "clones" that work just as good.

Get the wrench.  It's an invaluable and not expensive tool for changing out lenses.

You can get them in specialty optics supply stores like Edmund Optics from the Edmund Scientific family (the place for tinkerers, scientifics and overall geeks...)

Karl,

If the lens is in a Sinar DB mount then I don't think it has a shutter. You can fit this to a Toyo panel but you would need to fit the lens into a shutter first.

If its in a plain Sinar panel with a shutter, unscrew the rear element assembly off the lens and remove the lens retaining ring (using a wrench as described by others) to release the lens from the panel. Re-fit to the Toyo panel in reverse order.

It's one without a shutter, so I'll have to look out for one. Alternatively I could go for the 'top hat and ticker' approach which might be OK for still life stuff with slow film and aperture combination. Or I could get one of the ND filters that Leon is trying out.

Thanks for your help everyone. I'll try to get some shots to post up.

Best focus before fitting the filter!
