Collaboration #28: Kitsch is Beautiful
« on: October 25, 2012, 12:16:43 AM »
All registered Filmwasters are cordially invited to participate in Collaboration Number 28.

------------------------------------
Theme: "Kitsch is Beautiful"
------------------------------------

There is no right or wrong in a Filmwasters collab. You can be as literal or as lateral as you wish when interpreting the theme, but please take time to include a sentence or two about how your submission relates to the theme.

There is no 'time served' rule with these collaborations so don't worry if you only registered with us a week ago. Join in. The work we receive is always diverse and high-quality and the more people that get involved, the better the resulting gallery will be. So load up you cameras and get wasting film (and/or paper, glass, chemicals, tin, liquid light etc.).

------------------------------------------------------------------

Submission Deadline:  midnight Sunday, 11th November 2012

------------------------------------------------------------------

Basic requirements:

JPEG Requirements: One JPEG image.  Not larger than 800 ppi. in length or width. No more than 200kb.

PLEASE include your name in the image file name (e.g. "Susan L. Reflex - Conformity.jpg")

**ALSO INCLUDE**

1. A brief explanation of how you interpreted the theme.
2. The camera, process and/or type of film used.
3. Your website or blog address that you'd like listed.

EMAIL SUBMISSIONS to filmwasters [at] gmail.com (please write "Kitsch is Beautiful" in the subject field so we can find them easier).

Regards,
The Filmwasters Team.

Thanks to François for suggesting this collaboration theme and apologies to the same fine human being for it taking me about 5 months to get round to actually posting it (and people wonder why we haven't done a podcast in over a year).

Bah!
No problem there Ed!

Yesterday I went to your music site and saw you were working on a new album...
This and the trip to Manchester... does that mean the new album will have that 90's Manchester sound feel to it  :P

I knew it would be hard when I proposed it... but I also know that with such a subject, when you hit the jackpot, the rewards are really great :)

Really? I thought this one was almost too easy and I figured we deserved a simpler exercise for once. Didn't think anyone would find it hard. I have tons of wonderful kitsch cr*p around the house (it's often called 'retro' these days) and I suspect I'll select a couple of objects and take an arty still life of them with the LF rig and some instant film - no change there then  ;)

Years ago, Jacqui and I decided it would be totally sensible to buy a family of rather large 1960's Hong Kong-made blue china cats on a trip to Australia and then bring them back to London on the plane as hand luggage (that's 'carry on' for you North Americans)!! Amazingly they survived the trip (and subsequently the sterner test of the arrival of our two children) and they now hang out on a high shelf in our kitchen.

I've convinced myself....I think I'm going to take a family portrait!
 :) :D

Hey Diane....just because it's you and you're awesome, here's a sneak peak of the cats in blur mode with Amy in-between them. Taken 7 years ago....she's grown a little since  ;)

This is going to be a hard one! since I haven't been able to shoot anything lately, it's going to be tricky to find something between piles of negatives...

Thinking about it, I guess that this is only a difficult collab if you don't think kitsch stuff can be beautiful. I tend to be attracted to most objects which other people might consider 'kitsch' so I could take a photo of a lot of stuff in my house it would fit right in.
 ;D ;D

Definition of kitsch
noun
[mass noun]

art, objects, or design considered to be in poor taste because of excessive garishness or sentimentality, but sometimes appreciated in an ironic or knowing way: the lava lamp is a bizarre example of sixties kitsch

adjective

considered to be in poor taste but appreciated in an ironic or knowing way: the front room is stuffed with kitsch knick-knacks, little glass and gilt ornaments she offers kitsch interpretations of classic British dress, including a range of tartan mini-kilts

One thing about Kitsch is that it's always tacky and it always brings a smile in a way or another.

The supreme kitsch accessory: the iconic plastic pink flamingo lawn ornaments... I haven't seen one of those in a while.

If you have a hard time understanding the concept of Kitsch. Look up Jeff Koons, specifically his Michael Jackson and Bubbles porcelain piece.  :-\

There's a really fine line between tacky and kitsch that sometimes is easy to get confused, it all depends of the context!

Thanks, everyone for sending in your awesome entries. I'm looking forward to shooting mine tomorrow and actually having a reason to dedicate some quality time to a mini photo project with a real camera and some film.

In the meantime.... those of you who haven't sent anything in, there is still time, so get your thinking caps on and send us some beautiful kitsch.

In this case, PPI (pixels per inch) should really read simply PXL

I re-use text wherever possible. Susan wrote the collaboration blurb for the first few collaborations way back in the mists of time and now that she's not so actively involved in Filmwasters, I've taken over sending out the collaboration emails and putting up the galleries....all I've done is re-used her original words and changed the title and the date.

Next time round I promise I'll make the "PPI" acronym a thing of the past.

Now.....stop moaning and send us your photos!
 :P :-* ;) :D

Hello all......and thank you for the usual show of restraint regarding my tardiness in posting the OSSUM collaboration gallery. I'm finally back home after being away for work since Sunday evening and I can guarantee that the gallery will be posted before I got to bed tonight.

 :) ;) 8)

I was planning on holding out until Sean gave me some abuse (since he usually is the one to nudge me on this), but since he's obviously busy on a night shift or something, I'll take Becky and Miller as nudge subs and get cracking.
