I need some encouragement!
« on: May 30, 2012, 12:12:38 AM »
That and a mop...
We just had a severe storm. Very heavy rain and a small tornado. Lucky, the outside of the house is fine.
Bad news, there's about a foot of water in the basement, in the garage and inherently in my darkroom.
The old Burke & James view camera I started restoring a few years ago was swimming. The drying cabinet is now not so dry. My toolbox is in the soup. I have a computer which now has liquid cooling. My grandma's old art deco furniture has wet feet. I haven't assessed it all.

I currently have a pump, two shop vacs to clean the mess. Dirt everywhere... and I don't know what else...

 :'( :'( :'( :'(

Oh man!
That's a real drag.  I know this is a tough situation, but on the brighter side, you and your family are alright, and your house is still intact.

I'm so sorry to hear about the stuff getting soaked, hopefully some dry time will save most of it.
Really, really sad to hear this..wish I could help.

Must have been the same rainstorm that came through our area earlier today? Was very dark and windy with lots of rain!

I feel your pain. When i was younger living at home our root cellar  flooded annually it seemed. My darkroom equipment went for boat rides on more than one occasion around the cellar!

Just have to keep everything in a rubbermaid bin to keep everything water tight.

I hope the damage isnt as bad as you think

Really sorry to hear your news, Francois. As a UK resident, I'm not sure what the situation is with storm / flood coverage is when it comes to insurance in Canada. Are you going to be able to claim to at least get the place cleaned up and dried - if not the damaged / destroyed kit replaced?

We had a sewage flood in 2006 and were out of our house for 22 weeks whilst the ground floor was effectively rebuilt - so I really do appreciate your pain. Wish there was something practical I could do to help.

sorry to hear this Francois - especially after all the hard work you put in to building up your darkroom. But, as others have said, at least you are all safe and well - darkroom kit can be replaced (especially with your flair for up-cycling)

take care, and hope things can be cleaned up quickly without too much fuss.

Thanks guys.
I think I'll be able to save most of the lab since I built the walls out of wood.
Enlargers and most cameras are safe... I think.
Since the sewers didn't overflow, I should be able to get the insurance to pay at least for some stuff.
If not, I'm at the point where we all need to clean-up the place. Best way to throw out junk  :-\

But I'm now at the point where I make a big pile of wet stuff outside...

Sorry to hear that Francois.  It is a very unpleasant thing to have to deal with.  But as people have said, at least you & your family are safe.

Hopefully you'll soon have your dark room up & running again soon.

When things like that happen, I discovered you basically have only two choices: sit down and cry like a two year old or just grab the mop and keep on going. Besides, crying would just raise the water level...

We discovered we have no phone. And that I lost a full pack of 16x20 photo paper... I thought of putting the sheets to dry on the clothesline but I guess it would just make things worse...

Thanks for sending me good vibes... I need it.

Francois, that is such bad news, my friend.

As Leon said, you are resourceful and I always feel positive, so, I hope this doesn't break your stride - I'm sure it won't.

Positive thoughts coming your way.

Real sorry to read this, Francois.  I've been through a flood situation too so you have my complete sympathy.  (It's how my Pentax K1000 died.)  It sounds like you're not dealing with sewage so at least you can keep smiling while you clean up.  I hope the photo gear survives!

Hang in there,

Jeff

Thanks guys.
We still have a long way to go to get the place cleaned-up. But at least there's a good chance we'll get some professional hands to help out.

Still, it's something I could have done without. I'm not used to working so hard.

Everything should be alright. We're still emptying stuff... though at a much slower rate. Tiredness is getting to us... And to help with the morale, today's a rainy day...

So good to hear things are turning around. A little schadenfreude to brighten your spirits:

My wife worked for years as a university costume shop manager. One year, during a kids' summer fine arts camp there was a storm and the shop (in the basement below the stage area) began to flood. She started trying to get costumes, fabric, and supplies all above the water level onto the tables, wading through the water knee-deep to save/salvage as much as possible, when someone in a hazmat suit from the university came by to let her know that the water wasn't just rainwater from the overburdened road gutters, but backflow from the overloaded sewers.

The laundry lasted for weeks.

OK, I have some news of the mess.
The good: the appraiser came this morning and said that the damage done isn't too bad.
It should take about two weeks for him to transfer the appraisal to the insurance company.
Bad news: I'll pretty much be out of a lab for a period of time.

Since I have about two weeks until they dismantle it all, that means I'll have to finish cleaning it up and use it as much as I can in the meantime...

One late Friday evening in July 2006, just after returning from holiday, someone reported a blockage in a sewer on our street. Our houses were just about 6 years old. Unbeknown to us, the council contractors started jetting the "blockage" - to no avail. The blockage was a "bung" that had been left in a pipe immediately outside our house, negligently, when the houses were being built.

Consequently, when being jetted the raw, untreated sewage had nowhere to go except out of our downstairs toilet - like a fountain that shot 6 feet in the air. In 5 minutes flat, the whole of our ground floor was 6 inches deep in raw, recognisable faeces and other sewage. I was barefoot in this mess immediately it happened and spent 4 hours with the contractors trying to slop it out through the front door and patio doors.

We (Lara and I) + our 5 cats were forced out of the house for almost 22 weeks until the ground floor, kitchen units et al, had been sanitised, ripped out, dried out and replaced at a total cost of £40,000.

It was, aside from the death of my parents, a divorce and being burgled, the most traumatic thing that's ever happened to me and I was ill for weeks after it happened as a result of inhalation of some very noxious substances and contact with extremely unpleasant microbes. The stress didn't help much either.

I have enormous sympathy for Francois in this situation as it's an awful thing to happen to anyone. Sadly, with the effect of climate / weather pattern change and working as a HO Underwriting Manager for an insurance company, I have to deal with the aftermath of literally hundreds of flood losses every year that cost my company many £millions.

Francois!!! I spend a week or two away from FW and look what happens to you! Terrible news my man and you have my sympathy; floods suck. I had all my stuff flooded in storage once and it wasn't pretty (books, vinyl records, guitars etc. all destroyed.....fridge, TV and other souless, replaceable items, absolutely untouched). I got decent compensation in the end, but it wasn't worth it.

At least you seem to have been fortunate with compensation too, so it's not all bad news...well, it is, but at least the original bad news hasn't been made worse by secondary bad news....if you see what I mean  ??? ::)

Keep us updated and my best to the your family.

Thanks Ed!

Lets just say the upper level of the house looks like a big storage container. And my messy office is just even more messy than usual. I'm waiting for the last minute as all my darkroom stuff will have to be moved here... it's going to be cramped!
