Ilfotec LC29 - semi-stand developing
« on: February 09, 2012, 07:36:21 AM »
During recent (flickr generated) correspondence I discovered that LC29 can be used for stand developing (and what I've been referring to as stand is probably semi-stand). So I gave it ago - these were taken using OM10 with Polypanf @100 iso, developed in 1+100 LC29 (30 secs gentle rotation, 30 secs agitation + a further min gentle agitation @ 30 mins) As the film was pushed 1 stop I pushed developing time to 70 mins instead of 60.

Surprisingly even tones for so little agitation...
I'm always surprised at the stand development results as it completely goes against my notion of film developing!

LC-29 is my dev of choice. I have just bought 90m of Polypan F so I will trying to emulate your semi stand process Windy.

For 2 rolls of 36 exposures, on two separate spirals I need 600ml of developing solution - does that mean I use 6ml LC-29 and 594ml water?

Windy, how many frames of Polypan F can you get into a single cassette?

Yep, your calculations are correct.
To be precise, it would be 5.94ml of chemistry for 594.06ml of water... but that's going a bit overboard :)

Always wanted to try LC29 but don't seem to be available in the states.

A couple more from a second roll

I've been keeping the maths simple and adding 3ml developer to 300ml water (I use a kitchen measuring jug which is graduated in 50ml intervals for bulk measurements)

I load upto 36 frames in a casette (sometimes I get a few extra frames), but recently have been loading 18 frames as the winding mech on my OM10 is not too reliable

Thanks for that Windy, as soon as my Polypan f arrives from Germany ill give it a try.

Would this work for fp4 or hp5 with the same 1-100 dilution and 60min dev?

That's pretty amazing--those shots have none of the golfball-size grain I often get with full stand development.  Really smooth greys and fine texture.

The thing about stand developing is that it works with anything. You can put a 400 ISO film in the same tank as a 100, or an ilford in with a fomapan. Only used Rodinal until recently and normally would use a 60 mins developing time.

From Ilford's web site:

ILFORD ILFOTEC LC29 is a highly concentrated liquid black and white film developer that is flexible and economic to use. It is based on the technology used in ILFORD ILFOTEC HC developer but is formulated to be an easy to pour liquid for small volume film processing. ILFOTEC LC29 is designed to complement the features of all ILFORD films giving fine grain negatives with good sharpness characteristics and image quality.

I've seen a reference (on internet so it may not be reliable) that Ilford's only distributed HC in the US.

Mike

Hello!

Thanks very much for your info.

I'm just about to develop my 3 B&W 120 format rolls and this looks very nice.
I might be able to post some results after scanning those rolls and... lets see how they go.
Those films are Ilford HP5, FP4 Plus and Rollei Pan 25.

Oh, by the way, I'm new to this web site and just got allowed to log on...
Where should I go to say hello to everyone and introduce myself? :)

Hello all,

Just came back with my results!
Well... sorry about the quality as I don't have proper scanner to get the best image, I ended up putting all negatives on the lightbox and took each shot with Panasonic LX3...

I've done this FP4 plus with 4.5ml LC29 to make 500ml solution.

Counted up exactly 60 mins with initial 2min agitation, followed by another 2min agitation @ 30min and last 2min agitation @ 57.5min.

Negative itself looks very great with very smooth grain, although I kinda feel like lost some details...

Overall, very satisfied with the result! (yeah!!)

Hooray, I just stand developed 3 rolls of 35mm simultaneously (2xFP4 and 1xPolypan f) using 9ml lc29 and 900ml water. The negs look great, can't wait till they're dry so I can get scanning. It was so easy and carefree that I might stand develop all the time.

I'll post some results soon.
