FW UK Large Format Meetup - Kent 7.01.12
« on: December 31, 2011, 09:04:21 AM »
Hi All - can we have a roll call of those who are able to come down to Kent on Saturday 7th for our LF (and smaller appendages) camera meet-up? I'm going to sort out our lunch stop on Monday so need a rough head count.  Thanks.

To jog your memory:

Itinerary as follows:

1. Park up in Eastern Esplanade, Broadstairs, Kent (Approximately CT10 1DU) at 10:00 am, walk down to beach and along to Viking Bay, take pics, chat, wander, then back to cars.

2. Stop at pub for lunch (not decided which yet - will do soon)

3. Go to the Monks Granary at Standard Quay Faversham (ME13 7BS), have a wander around the Iron Wharf Boat yard and up/ around the creek.

Looking forward to it immensely.
L.

Leon, after so much rain here I have to say I'm a 'tentative'.  If there's some promise of a clear sky that weekend I'll be there.

Mrs LD and I will be there. We might also have a friend and keen photographer along (Howard) if he can get the day off work.

Will the day's proceedings will go ahead irrespective of the weather conditions? If so, I'll bring a selection of kit as for me as a newbie, trying to become familiar with "new" LF kit is a rain / windstorm might be a bit too much of an ask..... ???

The 10 day forecast (as at 31/12) on www.uk.weather.com suggests cloudy, max 8 degrees Celsius, wind from the west with a 20% change of rain. Here's hoping they've got that right.

Paul J. - Provided the forecast on Thursday doesn't show torrential rain, I think we should brave it. The Isle of Thanet always seems to have its own microclimate anyway.

I'm with you Paul - although, I'm sure Leon will be cracking the whip! I haven't even got a bag yet! I may have to improvise. Bugger, it all creeps up on you doesn't it!

If I end up having some time free from family obligations I'll be there in a flash. Chances of that coming to pass are slim to remote, but I'll call you, Leon, if it looks likely. For now though, don't include my head in your lunchtime count.

a small but concise meeting it will be then!

I'm struggling to find the time for suitable meal venue research.  there are a couple of nice fish and chip restaurants in Broadstairs/ ramsgate. It's not quite a gastropub, but it's always a fave with us.  Will that suit a group of Filmwasters?

I think we should save the pub until the end of the shooting day - there's a nice pub just by the boatyard in Faversham, so that will round up the day with a nice pint and chat about our unfeasibly large cameras.

I'm really looking forward to it.

edit: Met office are suggesting a light cloud, no rain, good visibility and middy gusty breezes - 10 deg C for saturday - not ideal, but should be ok.

No finer lunch than fish and chips when by the sea. The sit down and eat them with a hot mug of tea option is also spot on as we might need a warm up by then.

Can't wait. Will aim to be at the car park in good time for a 10 o'clock kick off.

I'll have to pass this one.  Although the weather does look reasonable for a long drive, I have two extra bits of work to get done in the next couple of days.

Annoyed ... but perhaps in the springtime.   :'(

Can't think of anything better than chish & fips for lunch... quick and easy which leaves more time for photos during a very short day.

for clarity - we had:

Leon with Shen hao

Paul & Lara J with Wista (and assorted others)

Paul M and with Chamonix (and assorted others)

Phil with Linhof.

Apart from 1 rather obnoxious Thanetian local deciding to provoke a reaction by walking in front of our shots, it was a really good day.

Lara and I thoroughly enjoyed the day, so thanks to Leon, Paul M and Phil.

I also picked up some useful hints and tips from Leon, Paul and Phil. The one thing that really dawned on me, though, is that more than any other format I've used so far, getting proficient at LF will take a lot of time and practice. So, I'm going to be setting up the rig in the kitchen and trying out all the camera movements so that I'm a bit more familiar with them "in the field".

Taking a meter reading first (only for the light to have changed completely at the point when you want to hit the "go" button), not taking out the dark slide before hitting the shutter, taking it out when the shutter is wide open and forgetting to mark which film holders / side of film holders have been exposed are but a few of the comedy moments in my, so far, brief foray into LF photography.

Being really well organised and getting one's own routine is critical. Here's a scan of a Polaroid Type 52 (expired 2006) shot I took yesterday. Okay, it's not the Mona Lisa but I was pleased to see a result on the day.

You guys are far too quick for me... expect mine in a few weeks perhaps when I've had the chance to do some developing.

Leon - The first has to be my favourite... I wonder if the interloper will appear on my shot?

Phil - A great use of shallow DOF and the scan has certainly enhanced the colour

Reminds me of the Ian Dury lyrics...

I'd rendez-vous with Janet
Quite near the Isle of Thanet
She looked more like a gannet
She wasn't half a prannet

Well, well, I didn't have you down as an Ian Dury aficionado..!! ;)

Despite wanting to take her out of shot with a half brick at the time, I actually like the one with the ghostly "prannet" in-shot. It could be a very good album cover....

Really like the composition Phil... I found that part of the beach a bit busy so thumbs up for picking something out.

Nigel - I was using a 10 stop ND so it was about 5 minutes... our interloper was there for 3 of them!
