Yosemite pics!
« on: October 11, 2011, 01:03:36 AM »
Well, I finally got the scans back from Yosemite.  Most of the black and white shots didn't come out since they were underexposed.  I think that my red filter was causing this so I will have to play with it a bit more when using filters.  Here are a couple from the Velvia 50 and Velvia 100.  I'm pretty happy with the results when compared to the digital files.  I lost some of the shadow detail after the scan and I haven't played around too much to remove dust or anything.  Any suggestions are welcome.  Hopefully the attachments work.  I had some issues getting the size down enough.  The camera used was a Mamiya RB67 Pro SD with the 90mm KL lens.  I used a polarizing filter on some shots and a GND on some.  Enjoy!

Sunny days with strong, directional light and deep shadows are a real killer for landscape photographs - even with the latitude that film gives. Velvia was a brave choice on such days - print film would have given greater latitude, as you know. At least with colour photography the blue sky is attractive. For me, a blue sky in mono is almost as tedious as the flat, slab greys we get in the UK much of the year.

These days, when I'm out shooting, I always hope for "cloudy bright" or even stormy cloud conditions - anything that helps provide a more even light across the scene and still some detail in the sky.

Your photos are lovely, by the way. This is the one place in the USA that I want to visit - primarily because I was "hooked" by Ansel Adams' photos when I first saw them in the early 1970s.
