Hi All,

I am planning a family long weekend in London before I start back working
after being unemployed for 4 months.  Managed to find a job
which is happy days . . . doing what I have been doing for the last 13 years,
Office Furniture, Machines and Stationery.

We would like to base ourselves near the centre and would like to visit a few
interesting film/analogue based camera shops maybe to pick up something
inexpensive and or film, it might be cheaper than getting it in Ireland!

Any interesting places you could send me, not to far out of the centre?

Sounds a bit crazy but I picked up few good deals in Portobello Rd.!
Other than that ebay and local charity/flea mkt it's been my source for years..

My favourite camera shop in London was Mac's in King Street, Hammersmith near Ravenscourt Road.  Not sure it's still there however.  If you decide to have a look it's just a few steps from the Ravenscourt Park tube station on the District Line.  And even if it's not open, there are some good restaurants and pubs in Hammersmith and Chiswick...

Have a good time; I'd love to be in London right about now!

Have consulted friend who told me about that place but I've not visited it ... says it was there the last time he looked since he lives nearby

Obvious one - Silverprint, not sure if it's cheaper for you to pick it up from there or not... or what you want.

Silverprint it's well remembered... a good place to buy films, papers etc...

Few reliable sources around the Bristish Museum and Holborn area to get decent cameras as well, RG Lewis, Camera Cafe...

I always enjoying looking in the Camera Cafe, by the British Museum. It's not cheap gear, mainly Leica and Nikon, but they sometimes have some MF bargains and it's just a nice place to hang out for a coffee.

I just noticed this on the Camera Cafe / Aperture web site.

Aperture Photographic will be having a second hand photographic sale to raise money for the Japanese tsunami appeal on Saturday 2nd April outside our Shop in Museum Street (not far from the British Museum). Customers are being asked to donate any old camera gear and accessories. Anything from photographic books to filters, please either send us or bring in your donations, anytime before the 2nd April. All money raised will be given to the Red Cross.

Congratulations on the new job. I hope you enjoy London. Best tip is to get on the tour bus and check out the sights - then go back to the ones that attract you. Second best tip is avoid the Underground like the plague. Dirty, over-crowded and unreliable. Buses and walking are better if you can manage it.

Aperture is a great shop - Richard and Patrick have done me some good deals in the past. It's not cheap gear but they are very competitive for good quality equipment.

Nigel, thanks for the heads up on the appeal. Patrick's wife is Japanese and took my wife's and my photo when we went in there the other weekend to pick up a lens. I have a couple of bits I'll take over there for them to sell.

Another good place to visit is Camera City, just round the corner from Aperture. York Cameras is a good shop but I always find them quite pricey for gear that sells for a fair bit less elsewhere.

Also worth trying London Camera Exchange on the Strand.  Quite a good selection of second hand gear and not too overpriced.
