Another home made lens
« on: March 14, 2011, 06:04:05 PM »
Made a lens for my Pentax ME Super. Its a focus loupe attached to the SLR body with tape. I got 4 keepers out of a roll of 36 shots. Im not sure what the ap is but its wide open. It's gotta be like 1.2 or something. I need to shrink it a bit so I can control the light better and not have such a shallow DoF. Anybody got any ideas on how to do that?

Oh yeah, and the film is Neopan 100ss. Not my favorite film so far but good for a test roll.

Pretty nice.
For a smaller aperture, just use a piece of black construction paper or black card stock and punch a hole in the center... it's that easy! :)

If you feel like calculating stuff, check on the articles page the short article I wrote.

Hey Erin, those are nice for a first go at it.

Looks like a long relationship is building here.

I should do that with my ME Super since it has decided to not focus at infinity- a homemade lens would probably be the way to go!

Hope to see more from your set up.  Can you post a photo of the camera and the lens?  I'd like to see it.  Yeah, well so I can steal it!  :-)

Thank you all so much!!!

LOL! Becky, whatever you want to steal, you just steal. If I can help you at all, it would be my pleasure. And this lens can focus from 6 feet to infinity.  ;D

Sapata and Becky, pictures to follow.

Ann, the third is my favorite too. Its hard to believe that the ground and those bushes are covered with thorns and needles sharp enough to go through leather, not to mention the mojave rattlesnakes. Stumbled across two in a bush just a few feet from my front door. Yay spring time in the desert!!! LOL!

Oh yeah, and I should also add that the lens isnt actually taped to the body but is taped to a T mount instead. I think I paid 14 bucks for that years and years ago.

Very nice  -I particularly like the last one.  I'm into the portrait composition for landscapes at the moment.

LOL! Havent taken it out where people can see it yet Sapata, but I can only image the looks it would get considering the looks this camera gets with its ordinary lens attached. It surprises me how little the general public sees film cameras and what their reaction is to them when they do. When I was at the Huntington Library with this camera, some girl sitting on a bench with her friend stared at it, then at me with this look like I was a rock star wearing the worlds largest diamond and said "Wow, what a great camera." Just made me smile.  :)

Thank you so much Leon!!! I really liked how the bushes all lined up in the portrait framing. I think I'll try it more often!

Yep ! I have the exactly the same feeling when I'm with any camera that it's not digital...

DEfinitely love that first image..your comments about the "looks" received when using film!  YES! using a homemade pinhole camera really stops them in their tracks! as you could imagine!

See...it's easy innit?  :D Well done. I think it's much cleverer taping the loupe to a T mount than to the camera itself like I do. May have to work on that.

Re the aperture issue, I'd go for filters instead of reducing the aperture (but that's mainly cos I'm lazy). An ND filter is the best way to go, but you can use reds/yellows/oranges etc. if you're sticking with b/w film. I just hold them in front of the lens, no need to fix 'em with anything as your hand's already holding the end of the lens.

Some lovely shots there, BTW. I can't wait to see more.

Whoops, almost forgot. It's not a real home made lens unless you use loads of red tape; black tape doesn't draw enough attention.

Thanks for the tips and compliments. I really have to get some of those filters packs.
