off Topic - website development help!
« on: January 24, 2011, 01:36:52 PM »
Hi All

Apologies for the off topic thread ... I'm requesting some help from the wealth of competent technorati that visits this site.

I'm having a re-jig of my photo website, and I thought I'd add a Simpleviewer gallery to save time ... but it's causing me a complete nightmare.  Not least because I am using the Freeway 5 pro WYSIWYG software to create the rest of the site, which does not allow for html editing.  I've followed all the instructions from simpleviewer, softpress and 3rd party support forums, but nothing seems to work.  Have also tried creating the basic page in Freeway, then adding the code that SVbuilder creates using a simple html editor and still no luck.

Is there anyone who can talk me through a step by step guide for simpletons on exactly which files I need to add where and what code goes where?  Or better still, someone who knows how to do it all in freeway?

Cheers

L.

I have used Freeway a bit but then went back to Dreamweaver. I am having my own nightmares with Wordpress currently.

If it all continues to go bad give me a call and I can help you through it, either personally or with a mate who is a gun programmer and doesn't mind helping out a bit.

Dreamweaver is great for making a website, it will do anything and everything you can think of doing on a website. It will even let you FTP to your server space from within the program. You have to know a bit a bout design and coding to be successful at website development. So this is why people use blogs.

Wordpress is an advanced web logging tool > weblogging > weblog > blog (in case you wanted to know)

So it is very easy to setup, add and subtract pages, add and subtract images, have people comment or sign up to, or get an RSS feed and generally administer the site. However if you want to get a more sophisticated gallery going you have to upload to your own space and then you get plugins load (both easy things to do) my trouble is trying to use the instructions written by a programmer - doing my head in.

I am nearly there with it all, Once I get it sorted a bit more this week I will report back.

Thanks Ken - look forward to hearing seeing the results.  I am pretty competent with Dreamweaver - I designed my own site and have my own space etc. Just looking to freshe things up - I have seen a couple of nice themes at ThemeForest and so may give it a go in next couple of months. Keep us posted.

Regards, Carl

You'll need to customize the xml in a text editor and then spend countless hours trying to figure out how to get it to work as part of a page or site with full navigation, etc.

I hand code for the most part, except any gallery scripts that are already written and easy to customize.  Personally I love how simpleviewer  looks, but recommend against anything flash as you'll eliminate ipad and iphone users from viewing the site as apple devices don't support flash.

I use a variation of lightbox, which can be found here:

The benefit of simpleviewer, if you're not worried about mobile devices, is no right click image downloading.  lightbox makes it harder but not impossible...

you can see how I did mine here:

Thanks All - Gregor, I've just replied to your email - thanks for the tips.  I'm going to try the lightbox script and see where I end up.
