Pinhole Theme
« on: January 08, 2011, 10:42:05 AM »
During the last twelve months or so I have been busy with an ongoing project entitled "Disintegration", with an initial focus on old derelict and abandoned buildings and their surrounds.

The idea is to observe and record the effects of time and weathering on man-made and organic objects. I chose the pinhole camera because I feel that it encourages  the slow contemplative approach which best suits the subject matter - and of course, it cried out for black and white!.

A short while into the project I realised that a number of sub-themes were beginning to emerge and that they, in themselves, were worthy of pursuing. One such sub-theme is "Corners", of which I have attached a few examples.

The images were all captured on a handmade 6x6 pinhole camera with a focal length of 38mm. The film used was a combination of Fuji Acros and Ilford FP4 Plus. Negatives were scanned on my Flextight scanner.

Hope you enjoy them!

Very strong and the images work together well!

I might suggest that it is not the camera per se that makes making images slow and contemplative - its the photographer!

These are wonderful!!!! :)

So thrilled to have another pinhole shooter here, plus kudos for making your own camera.  We have some handy folks around here as well so being a D-I-Y is great!

Would like to see the camera too!

Yes, love them too. IS that pinhole?? They look sharper than my lens images!

killer shots lawrie! I like the tight view of all these corners. specially the last one.. gives off a cramped feeling just looking at it. luckily I'm not suffering from claustrophobia :D
also, I think you've caught some walls with interesting structures~

looking forward to more on this. it's one of my own favorite themes that I don't photograph enough(!)

[Would like to see the camera too!]

Thanks for viewing and the kind comments.

The camera I built is for the 6x6 format. The front conical housing (38mm "focal length") is removable (via the three wing nuts) and contains a blade shutter and pinhole. I normally use the Hasselblad SWC viewfinder for framing.  The smaller conical housing can be fitted and results in a 22mm "focal length."

The camera was constructed from mahogany, aluminium, plastic, old lens hoods and various found bits and bobs.

Regards,

Lawrie

good looking piece of magic~ I very much like the possibility to change "lenses" like so. but I suppose you can't do it mid roll?

Lawrie, nice work. I'm very familiar with the SWC point of view - perfect for interiors!

Wow! These are just gorgeous Lawrie! I absolutely love the perspective you chosen and how completely different each image looks even though we are looking into corners in each shot. That first one is my absolute favorite! And what a gorgeous camera!
