Anyone here (in the UK) shoot weddings?
« on: January 04, 2011, 06:30:22 PM »
If any of you Brits shoot weddings, I just saw this Tweet on Twitter:

"@lipsticklori  My sister needs a wedding photographer who's good at candid shots and available on 2nd Sept. Budget £1200, max. Any suggestions?"

I don't know who lipsticklori is, but her tweet was RT'd by Tamzin Outhwaite.

Just watch out for the wedding photos scam, involving a cheque that will bounce and leave you out of pocket.

Wedding photography...
As long as nobody ends up like my parents did...
The photographer they ordered never came. Another photographer had badly written information about the wedding on a piece of paper. He inadvertently came to the wedding. After shooting the entire ceremony, he asked my parents if they were his clients... which turned out to be absolutely not. But since the official photographer never came, he processed the films anyways and had them choose the album pictures on a contact sheet... and everyone looks funny on it :)

If I were in the UK, I might do it is a couple of Filmwasters would accept to work for cake :)

If you respond, you'll have to ask why Tamsin RT'd the tweet. Maybe she's invited to the wedding.

Had a spell doing weddings / portraits / events in the early 1980's whilst trying to supplement my meagre earnings as a trainee underwriter. Wedding photography is hard, pressurised, thankless work. Every guest is a professional (in their own mind) and they will insist on trying to usurp the pro's shots whilst in "mid flow". I came close to belting a few of them over the years.  >:(

Then you had the pressure of processing the film and getting the printing done. My mate and I used to try to get some of the less formal B&W shots of the guests processed and printed by the time that the wedding reception was in full swing - then we'd take orders and make a few bob extra.

The hourly rate - when you take into account cost of equipment, processing time and visitis to the client's home with the proofs / album - was less than minimum wage.

Goodness knows how a full-time wedding tog makes a crust these days. Most of the guests have got the same / better gear than the pro (not that that means much) into the bargain and a lot of couples seem happy with an accumulation of snaps from guests....

No thanks. I'd rather shoot for my own enjoyment.... :)

Tamsin Outhwaite? Wasn't she in "Suicide Half Hour" (Eastenders)?

That reminds me of a friends wedding I attended, one of her friends declared he was going to take professional shots for her and I watched him as he did the rounds taking "arty" shots of the happy couple - reflected in spoons, through arches etc etc on his little digi. The results were all hilariously bad, out of focus and unusable. Very amusing.

Amazing how trends move with weddings. Multiple images of the bride and groom hiding behind trees and looking at one another, de-saturated to mono with just the bride's lips and a red rose in red, reflections in (choose shiny object and place here), wedding ring placed in v-shaped arch formed by open pages with backlight to form a perfect heart shape.....

OMG......I think I'm going to chuck..... :P

Trends tend to be bad for most things (look at any picture of yourself from the 80's), but there are some people doing lovely wedding work. When I see great wedding images I sometimes wonder if the photographer vets their clients to avoid the bridezilla types, and only chooses couples who are fun.

Here's one studio that I think does great work: http://www.onelovephoto.com  I like the way it looks so casual and effortless.

I saw some really really awful photoshopping today on facebook (mother&child not wedding pics tho)but i better not say or post the example I showed my friend... They really are running pictures through filters for $1 a photo...
Actually I fear if i show it, it'll get back to me somehow lol

And yes, I've only done two or three weddings and they were only on a personal basis. I think the only really good one was where I wasn't the only or the pro, I was there to take those fabulous photos with my weird cameras as per bride's instructions.
