Anyone get a new scanner for Christmas?
« on: January 03, 2011, 07:29:36 PM »
Or more accurately:

"Does anyone want to sell me their old scanner?"

Looking for something capable for 35mm and 120

I made a mistake by buying a cheap Canoscan one a while ago and to be honest, it's crap.

Thanks,

Chops

Really sorry to hear that ChopperT, nothing more expensive than a bad purchase.

I've had a bit of a love/hate thing going on with mine until recently when I invested in VueScan and was thinking seriously about either just getting pro scans done or upgrading to a dedicated film scanner that would do 35mm and 6x6, etc.

However, now I've started to get used to it, I'm quite pleased with it. Although I've never owned any other scanner, I doubt you'll find much better value for money than an Epson V750 Pro, especially if you can find one second hand.

Hope your search bears fruit.

Well, I still have an old parallel port powered Imagewave scanner gathering dust under the table ;)
It's dreadfully slow, maxes out at 300 DPI and won't scan negatives...

I guess you won't want it... better dump it for recycling.

re-purpose it.  Take the lens out of it before you toss it so you can make a (short focal length) camera obscura or something.

Oh yes- front surface mirrors, stepper motors, interesting little gears and of course the lens.

I used the lens to build a wide-angle toy thingmyjigg:

....and I built myself a negative holder with the glass from my old scanner/printer.

francois, you can always make a light table out of it ;)

if I hadn't given away mine I'd probably mod that one

I've got something way better for a light table. Years ago, my local grocery store was liquidating some Pictronic picture frames. These are LED backlit fiber optics panels that you overlay a regular picture on top to make them glow... But if you don't put a picture on them, they make a beautiful (albeit smallish) light table.

It's also one of the rare "Designed in the UK" products I've managed to bind in recent years :)
