Colour Darkroom
« on: December 23, 2010, 12:58:13 PM »
Do people here use the colour darkroom? I have access to one at uni so I'm making the most out of it by printing all my negatives in there.

Also are people worried how Kodak has stopped producing their cut RA4 paper (only selling it in massive rolls) and that Fuji are only making certain sizes of their RA4 paper?

You've reminded me that while I don't use a darkroom, I do have a load of RA4 paper and chemicals I bought ages ago for experimentation and I really must use them before they go any more out of date.  It's probably not too concerning if Kodak/Fuji are only going to produce bulk roll paper, if there's any demand at all for smaller sheets then I'm sure it won't be long before someone with access to a darkroom (probably at their uni  ;) ) starts cutting smaller quantities from bulk rolls, packing in black plastic bags and reselling on ebay.

I hope when that day comes someone will cut the paper and sell it, but I think cutters made to do that are expensive and it is a lot of effort to do it manually. There definitely is some demand because when Kodak stopped making their boxes of smaller sheets earlier this year, the remaining stocks were bought up very quickly.

Making a cutting jig that's save to use in the dark shouldn't be too hard.

Make a spool on one side (like a toilet paper or paper towel holder).
Rotary cutter in the center (they're probably the safest to use in total darkness).
Stop block on the other side which is calibrated to make standard sizes.

With something like that, you should be able to cut-up rolls to the right size in no time :)
