One hour in.....
« on: December 04, 2010, 01:33:25 PM »
Hi

I am always excited looking at the posts and threads on FWs, especially those that form a mini-sequence or sort of brief examination of a place or neighbourhood - either intimately known or being visited or explored with a camera for the first time.  As I've only recently begun doing street work and more urban photography, and have now acquired the habit of almost always having a camera with me, I've started to set myself little tasks or projects.  If I am in a town or city for some reason I try and set aside an hour or so to explore a neighbourhood.  A limit myself to one hour and usually a single film and then I'll pack up, but in that time I try focus intensively just on image making without any other distractions. I've found that its become a really good discipline for me and has got me thinking a lot about what I am trying to achieve with my photography.  Obviously, it doesn't have to be a town or urban setting, but the idea for me, is to try and get to grips with evoking the atmosphere and character of a place, and how we go about representing that, and this seems a good way for me to get to get to grips with this way of using a camera.

I was just wondering if anyone else might be interested in doing an occasional 'One hour in...' type of collaboration?  Doesn't have to be the same town or place but we could just post a selection of shots taken form one single hit and run visit to somewhere.  Not sure about the exact format or details but maybe if there is any interest this could be something for the FWing 'mods' to think about.

Or maybe this is more of an APUG type enterprise and perhaps I should be posting this there, or on some street photography site that I am not even aware of?

Hi Graham.

I don't know if I'd go for a "one hour" in (insert destination here) collaboration - purely on the basis that if I'm travelling any significant distance, I prefer to get there early and take my time shooting. As I tend to use an unmetered 120 (often tripod mounted) moving swiftly isn't really an option.

I am, however, definitely up for something that allows me to explore the place a bit and get the best shots I can. I'm equally happy to do this as a joint or individual effort - depending on the majority of those wishing to participate.

Looks like a good idea to me.

Not a "no" from me, FWIW.

I've just twigged that this will help me to achieve my "project" for 2011 and, if it does, it will have been a big help in creating a submission for an RPS accreditation. Whether I get the accreditation is a different story but "fail to plan, plan to fail" as the old saying goes.....

Hi Graham - sorry, I missed this first time around.

sounds like a great idea to me.  We could run it as our next collaboration gallery.  I'll get on to the others and see what the think.

I've just registered one-hour.in (onehour.in was already taken) and as I'm staying home for a few more months I need something to do (other than taking pictures) when the baby is asleep. The idea is to have a site where you can post your set of images of the hour you spent in that particular place. I'm open to suggestions on how this should work. Here's what I've came up with up to now. It's still quite nebulous as I haven't started coding, yet.

  • If you want to see all sets of images for a place (e.g. Llanfairpwllgwyngyll) just go to one-hour.in/llanfairpwllgwyngyll
  • As I don't want to spend money on hosting the images (for now) you can't upload directly to the site. In the beginning you'll probably need a Flickr account where you upload your images and I'll just link to them
  • After creating your new set of images on the site you can also add a short description to the set and possibly to each image (or I'll just take the text from Flickr)
  • Some kind of map that shows all the sets of images would be next
  • Maybe each set should have max. 10 images so that people only post their best images
  • ...

Please share your thoughts on that. Maybe we should take it off the forum though so as not to annoy everyone with this stuff.

Hi Urban

That sounds like the makings of an interesting site with a lot of potential for putting Graham's idea to good use.

Have you discussed this previously with Graham (Wensleydaleblue)?  It might be best to see if he wants to be involved in getting the idea moving.

I envisaged the next collaboration gallery being based on a similar idea where we choose an hour of the day on a specified date, then all produce one picture of our home towns for the gallery submission.

I'd love to do a collab on this basis. Might just get an hour over on the croft :-)

That sounds like a good idea for a collaboration Leon. And I haven't spoken with Graham about the project, yet. It just came to my mind today.

This sounds like an interesting collaboration. I missed out on the last one through too much work (although I had, what I thought, was a great idea). So I'd be keen to give this a go.

I'm definitely up for this but I'll have to be a bit "creative" with the definition of "one hour" as it can take me ten minutes to take a meter reading and programme it into the Hassy.

However, thinking about it, I have just acquired a very nice SX-70 and I'm going to be getting some PX70 Color Shade Push and/or PX100 mono / sepia film which might speed me up a bit.....
