Conclusive Proof That Digital Sucks
« on: December 05, 2010, 11:18:06 PM »
Digital or Film? The question of which is better has been on everyone's minds since digital emerged as the coming force just over a year ago. While the film world is still healthy - for instance there's no chance of manufacturers reducing their lines or any chance that a company as prominent as, say, Polaroid, will go to the wall - it's never soon enough to prove conclusively, once and for all, that film is way better than digital.

Taking a stroll through the snowy gardens of RHS Wisley earlier today I was struck by a scene which reminded me of some of Michael Kenna's work in Japan. Not wanting to pass up such a golden opportunity to illustrate to the world how much film rules over digital I set to work. 25 seconds later I was done. Proof was in the bag.

Compare this digital shot taken earlier today with my Nokia N8 phone & then edited online in Picnik once I'd uploaded it to Flickr.

...with these two much better efforts by Michael Kenna shot using a Hasselblad film camera.

Clearly no-one here would be as misguided as to suggest that there's a gulf of talent between the two photographers (after all, we all know the best way to take a picture is "Don't think, just shoot!") and the fact that I didn't even look through my non-existent viewfinder before snapping my digital photo is also not a factor. Film is the winner. You can relax. It's all good.

Ed, you are the way and the light.  ;D If ever proof was needed then you have provided proof of what us filwasters have known all along.

There is a Satsuma in the post for you. :-*

Well done fella !

You can't argue with that sort of proof.

It's a victory for the controlled experiment and the scientific process, a victory for film and a victory for common sense and the working man/woman.

IL Presidente !

scientific purposes aside, it a shame that first shot wasn't caught on film ;) nicely seen, ed!

I'm an empiricist. You can't argue with proof like this.

Miles: Thanks for remarking on the controlled nature of my experiment. It's important to leave no loopholes for the naysayers to exploit  ;)

Vicky: Sorry for the confusion. The clue was in the smiley face icon on the post and the utter rubbish I wrote  ;D

I did have my Land Cam with me actually, but was juggling two frozen children and a phone call at the time. Actually, I still would have given it a go, but I thought I had no film in the camera and couldn't face unpacking a pack and trying to load it at that precise moment. It was only 30 minutes later, after I'd walked some distance away from these poles in the snow, that I realised I did have a shot left in the camera. Doh!

I did waste some film though. One of them of Amy pulling her 'teenager in training' expression and a few more of some ducks slipping across a frozen pond. Have scanned them and may post here soon...probably in time for next weekend's thread.

The harsh gritty reality of your digital urban landscape is a great euphormism directing biting critical comment towards the chasm between the haves and the have nots south of the Thames river leading onto a wider comment on man's inhumanity to man during this time of conservative government austerity and Christian celebration.

If you had used film it would have just been some sticks in the snow.

No, don't take him away, please! He's a nice man really. I've met him and he seemed so calm and quite normal.

I fully agree with Ken182, the juxtaposition of your satire melts evenly over the human existence.  Reminding all of us that we really can easily disregard whatever we feel like as long as we feel like we are majoritized. <----I just made that word up.  But then again I am okay with that because I feel majoritized.

Looks like a question of scale to me.  I recognise the last two as pretty pictorial landscapes but doesn't the first one show a really scary table-full of the old marching powder scattered with expired matchsticks?

I'd stick to the old green grass of home if I was you :D
