Your thoughts (NOW WITH PHOTOS)
« on: November 20, 2006, 12:37:04 AM »
I haven't been shooting much of late, and I typically keep my cameras loaded with B&W film. I was invited to participate in a themed group show. The theme is the neighborhood. More specifically, work is to be based upon the neighborhood within one mile of the gallery in the Fall. So, I stepped into some color.

It's a new venture, this color thing. I don't feel so attached to it since I can't print it myself. I felt a little bit of freedom to muck around with the process a bit. I allowed the scanning of the negative and the adjacent frame to creep into one of the examples.

The show will be paintings, photos, silkscreen prints, and possibly other media as well. So far there are about 10 of us making work for the show. It's planned for Feb 07.

HMMM. Can't seem to keep the photos up with a link. They're now attached. you can see more here http://stillworks.blogspot.com/.

Any feedback, crtique or thoughts will be appreciated.

John, it's probably a good thing for you to get into a bit of colour for a change...even if only to confirm that you don't like it as much  :) Of the photos here and posted on your blog my fave is the Orange Truck (see SB's post below).

I love the autumn colours and the line across the bottom quarter of the photo. Re the house shots....my preference would be to go for details rather than whole houses as they might work better with your Diana; make a virture of the lens distortions. Just a thought.

...also, how about overlapping some frames to create a narrative of sorts? That might work given the theme.

Congrats John. Very happy to hear you're back in the saddle again.

I've attached my two favorites. I really like them both!
But if I have to select between the two, you know I'm going with the blur house....I think?
Hard one.

Good thought. You're corrupting me, you know. I really really try to be pure as the driven snow, but I like the dirt, muck, haze distortion and rambling bits too much. Good insight. (Skorj's polaroids are killing me these days BTW).

Susan. I have time. As much time as I can afford to keep shooting. That truck shot. I didn't load the roll right. I leardned alla this on crap cameras and I didn't know about aligning the "start" arrow with the red dot in the film chamber part until I watched a leardned friend load her roll in her real camera. Know I know.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm really taken by blur house and moved. The fact that you misloaded the film for the former really makes it for me, actually. Fine work.

I almost have to be precise when shooting color and finding the perfect composition, etc. It feels like I have to make the extra effort when using that stuff for some reason. I get easily intimidated by it beings that I shoot mostly black and white.

I like the exposure on the second photo and can't really say what I don't find appealing about it, did I say that right?...the tones and focus are nice and perhaps if you got a bit closer rather than the long shot, for detail, it would satisfy even more so. Hell, I don't know. I like it regardless. And of course, the quaint little house with the sneaky borders is just as nice. I'd go back there and shoot this again....just saw that branch down first...har har.

The point is you got yourself out there again and that is just as important. Good for you, John boy... ;D
