Dev Questions.....
« on: August 29, 2010, 02:07:38 PM »
I took some pictures at a wedding yesterday and have 2 rolls i need to Dev

HP5+  & Neopan 1600

I have Aculux 3, ID-11 and Rodinal.

I dont want big grain so will avoid Rodinal...i think.

Weather was very erratic yesterday, so thinking could have quite a bit of contrast on the HP5

The 1600 was all inside the church, no flash, so could be lacking in contrast

Any suggestions on dev's?

All help much appreciated.....

I'm probably not best qualified to give this advice as it's many years since I had a darkroom and developed my own film / prints. However, I found this:

which might be of interest....??

I know I used to process everything in D-76, which is the same as ID-11.
It produces a nice grain structure and gives relatively fine grain. For the HP5, you might want to use the 1:1 dilution since it minimizes grain... only drawback is the processing times are freaking long. (13 minutes at 20°C)

As for the Neopan, I'd probably be tempted to push it 1 stop since you expect it to be underexposed... so I would go ID-11 full strength... (15 minutes at 20°C)

These are times for 35mm film by the way...

But I think Leon might chime in with a different solution...

I second the ID11 as you can't go wrong. HP5 isn't under normal conditions a high contrast film, you have to push it; but normal exposure & developer times with HP5 should show the films long shoulder.
In other words as long as you didn't under-expose you'll be fine, to be on the safer side higher dilution will give less contrast.

Rodinal is interesting, as you can get some great results with surprisingly fine grain even when pushing....

Acros at 12,800 in low contrast lighting Rodinal for 45mins 1:100

A slightly thin neg, with no tones but I am a believer in the church of the holy Rodinal
There's more to this photography thing than meets the eye.

Very Nice.

I like the last one of the four best.

What dev did you go for in the end?

Anything outside the church was ilford so I used ID-11, standard timings.

Inside was fuji 1600. Aculux normal dilution 20% extra time.

I know this is going to be a stupid comment, but in the second picture, the groom reminds me of Lurch in the Addams Family... probably has to do with the Gothic building and the deep shadows under the eyes...

I'll add that I apologize to the groom...
