Thanks - both of those look interesting, especially the Man Ray one as I did an essay on surrealism.

I can endorse the Natchwey film...it's pretty stupendous and ends up somewhere that you didn't think you were going, at least regarding Natchwey's character and his motivations.

I recently watched the almost-as-good "Shooting Robert King" based on Chop's recommendations and while it's nowhere near as successful a portrait of a photographer at work as the Nathcwey film; it is pretty compelling (albeit incredibly sobering and depressing). Left me feeling pretty shattered, it has to be said.

Hi wblati - we had a very similar thread a while ago.  I've managed dredged this up from the dusty old Filmwasters Archives:

http://filmwasters.com/forum/index.php?topic=2744.0

lots of good suggestions there.

There's a great documentary about Sam Wagstaff , titled, 'Black, White & Grey', running on LogoTV this month. And it should be up on their website for viewing by the end of this week. Even though Wagstaff wasn't a photographer, he was a collector and benefactor who changed the industry.

I just saw Art21's short on Sally Mann, quite good. I then watched "What Remains" about her quest to get her work of decaying corpse into the galleries. Fascinating study not only on making esoteric images, but on getting them seen, with an interesting back story on her family and their involvement in her work.

There was a great documentary on BBC I think about 1 year ago . . .

'The genius of Photography'

im sure they can be got on YOUTUBE now.

The Genius of Photography Episode Guide

Season 1 Episode 6:
 Snap Judgements

An investigation into the financial value of photographs, in light of the record-breaking price achieved by an Edward Steichen print at Sotheby's in 2006. From America to China and Africa, there's a look at how the business of being a photographer has changed by the market's sudden interest in what was once the poor relation of the art world. Last in the series

Season 1 Episode 5:
 We Are Family

How the lens translates personal relationships into timeless still images, as strangers, celebrities, lovers and children are captured on film. The programme also shows the consequences when photographers turn their cameras on themselves, examining their decisions over which aspects of their personal lives they reveal

Season 1 Episode 4:
 Paper Movies

Journeys that inspired the production of some highly acclaimed photographic works, including Robert Frank's odyssey through Fifties America, William Klein's walk around the pavements of New York, Garry Winogrand's charting of the human comedy in Central Park Zoo and William Eggleston's guide to Memphis and the American South. Part of The Art of Arts TV week

Season 1 Episode 3:
 EPISODE: 3

How photographers dealt with the dramatic and tragic events of the Second World War including D-Day, the Holocaust and Hiroshima. Magnum legends Philip Jones Griffiths and Susan Meisalas, soldier-photographer Tony Vaccaro and broadcaster Jon Snow consider the questions extraordinary pictures raise about history, as seen through the viewfinder

Season 1 Episode 2:
 1918-1945: Documents for Artists

How the art form's precise, objective and apparently machine-like qualities were utilised to promote the radical utopia of the Soviet Union and bring order and clarity to the chaos of Weimar in Germany. However, while some prized the medium for its ability to document, others were using it to explore the irrational, the subjective and the surreal - photography's natural language

Season 1 Episode 1:
 1800-1914

A comprehensive insight into one of the world's most influential art forms. The first episode uncovers some of the key inventions of photography and the way in which it became an integral part of the modern world - not just by documenting but also by changing the way people understood their world. There's also a look at pioneer photographers, including George Eastman, who made photography available to the masses with the invention of the Kodak brand

I checked and many parts are missing on the sets rendering the show unwatchable.

But if you have links to full episodes, post away!

Not sure where you are, but if you're in the US, the Ovation channel shows this series (The Genius of Photography) every few months.  And it looks like they are broadcasting it again next week. Check here:

For those interested in watching Arakimentari, I found a series of large-ish files that were put on Rapidshare.
I found the links here Secure Warez.

Now, I do have to say the documentary isn't for the faint of heart (very mature audience rating). Doing the things Araki does is bound to get you either a massive slap in the face or simply arrested (and most probably both)...

I had a very hard time getting a grasp of how he works as he goes from "dirty old man" to totally charming in the blink of an eye...

I didn't find this to be a fun and easy watching experience...

At first, I was mostly curious. I wanted to see what kind of person he was since I've never really been a fan of his images which I always find totally disrespectful of women... and after watching the documentary, I don't like his images any more than I did before... neither do I like the fact that he seems double sided (Jekyll and Hide)...

I must admit he does always look pretty joyful. It's probably related to the fact that there always seems to be a glass of booze in every shot where he's not taking pictures...

The only good thing I found is he seems to have quite a collection of nice cameras...

Anyways, for those who want to take a look, now you have the link.
