I am a total numpty (Hasselblad instant back)
« on: May 11, 2010, 02:10:44 PM »
I bought a Hasselblad 100 Polaroid back (actually I got 2, but one is going to become something other) and a pack of fuji FP-3000 film yesterday. I've never used instant film before so I was so excited to try it when I got home (ignoring the voice that says save it for something special).....

I loaded it up wrong and proceed to waste the first two shots because for some idiot reason I didn't bother to consult the interweb to see how it actually works- the black safety strip *must* got through the rollers.-'It's self explanatory even though it seems very difficult'. I feel pretty dense right now but I have truly wasted film so I feel this inane little story truly belongs here. Here are the first three shots:

I'm looking forward to shooting the next 7.......

DS - Don't beat yourself up too much. I'm sure anyone who uses one of these had a few mishaps in the familiarisation process! The good thing about mistakes is they tend to focus the mind to prevent it happening again - the fact it happened a few times should act like a tattoo on your soul.  :-\

Ditto what Phil said.  You're going to love having that back!

Those Polaroid backs can be tricky and if you got it used, the rollers might be stiff (from dried gunk stuck in there), and that can make it harder to get them loaded properly. You can take the rollers out & clean them in warm, soapy water until they roll better.

Been there (or near there) and done something very similar....but only 2 or 3 times. I'm clever. I learn - eventually.
 :D

What I would take from this is that you're still obviously excited by film & cameras. Like a little kid. How cool is that?

You rule!

@Ed- Thanks- I do get way, way too excited about these things....

@Tomato- yeah, the second one I got was seriously encrusted in red gakk that eventually came off nicely in hot water and a bit of fairy liquid

@Phil- I am both skint and a skinflint so these experiences do rather burn into my brain as hate wasting money

@Ann- I love having it already.

This week I got some shed tinkering time & used the other back to make a pinholaroid camera. It works rather nicely. Will post some pics here once I get some scanning done.

DS,

I worked for Hasselblad for over 20 years and I could not count the number of times this came up.  It seems way too simple to just slot the pack into the back and shut the door...

Have fun with it though, now you have it sussed.
