lube for a tripod head?????
« on: April 05, 2010, 06:11:38 PM »
My tripod head is sticking BAD.   :'(

It moves okay, but it has some places in the movement where it sticks and is quite the cranky beast.
I took at apart last night and the "grease" seems to be poorly distributed and there are wear spots that I imagine are the cause of the sticking.

My question is what lube or grease do I use to get it back to a smoother action??
I don;t expect it to be good as new, but less fighting with it would be nice.
It's a Manfrotto 3025 if that helps.

Thanks all!   :) :)

As it's something which only moves slowly you could probably use anything but I think lithium grease is what is normally recommended.

I know Molybdenum grease is often used for camera lenses. If the remaining grease is white, moly grease was used.
Wipe the part clean with a towel and possibly some lighter fluid, then apply new grease and reassemble... at least, that's what I would do.

I think moly grease is just lithium with moly additives (but I'm not an expert). If it's white, then I think it's lithium but it may not have moly in it. You can also get lithium grease with other additives but, for this purpose, any lithium grease that you can get from the local car parts shop would do.

I also found this...

it's in the UK but I guess it's available in the US as well. Doesn't actually say what it is though.
