Slide Projectors - any advice
« on: November 04, 2009, 10:44:58 PM »
I'm a bit bored of scanning and have quite a few slides I'd like to view. Second hand ebay type thing. Anyone still use them?

I still use one, it's a Kodak Ektagraphic III
Nothing fancy just carosel type.

It came from eba**,

have you considered borrowing one from the library?
They used to let card holders "check them out".

I found a Kodak Carousel cheap at a rummage sale once. Lucky for me it came with a special adapter so I don't need to load slides into trays to view them.

Sadly, I don't use it much...

Singer Caramate!

The only choice! No screen needed. PORTABLE! With the ADDED benefit on an in-built cassette recorder for accompanying music, and auto-triggering the slide advance. The later model I had once, even had a REMOTE CONTROL! How can woman or man live with such conveniences?

And it also can accept larger spools of thread and sew through very thick material  ;)

You could probably do better at garage sales. Kodak Carousel projectors last for decades but are the type of item that lots of people think are worthless. You could more likely pick one up at a garage sale or thrift shop cheaper, be able to inspect it in advance (and not have to deal with eBay).

I got a slide projector last year, FORGET scanning slides, when you have seen your velvia projected 4ft x 6ft you will be amazed (at least I was). both my projectors are remote control autofocus jobbies and cost a fiver each at a boot sale, i'd forget ebay as the postage will kill you as they are quite weighty (motors, fans and all that).

The fun thing with the Kodak Carousel and Ektagraphic projectors is the wide variety of lenses available for them. I have a multi-element wide angle (55mm I think it is) projection lens that allows me to project almost wall sized from just a few feet... amazing.

You won't get such choices with other brands like Argus.

Also, I once read that the older Ektagraphic projectors that are made in Germany are much better than the same model made in the US. They also have that funky 60's feel to boot :)
