Finally...Some LF Results
« on: September 13, 2009, 11:58:20 PM »
As some of you may recall from this thread I bought an LF setup earlier this year and then proceeded to do nothing with it until last weekend when my father-in-law was kind enough to fashion a lensboard for me. I took a test snap at the time to make sure there were no lightleaks etc. and then left it until this morning when I decided to take a couple of 'proper' pictures. BTW, I'm using a 405 back for now and shooting mainly Polacolor 125i until I feel I've got to grips with the camera.

N.B. Viewed on Firefox, both of these images look a bit iffy, but they look fine on my PC in Photoshop, Paint, Picasa etc. Weird. Apologies for the less than perfect image reproduction.

SNAP 1: An hour and 8 rubbish photos of a vase of roses later I convinced the lovely Jacqui to sit for me. She did so on the condition that I made her a cup of tea and she could tear up the photo if she hated it (it was still only 8AM by this point & we hadn't yet got dressed). It came out well-enough; we were both pretty happy. Polacolor 125i film at f4.5 & about 50th sec.

SNAP 2: Amy was wondering around the house and - as used as she is to seeing all manner of weird cameras in action - she became intrigued by the Tachihara and my makeshift black bag. I showed her the image through the ground glass & she was persuaded to sit with mummy for a couple of shots on the condition that she received a snack ("one that is small and sweet"). Payment terms agreed to I set the shot up quickly and took a couple before she squirmed free. Fujifilm FP100-C film at f4.5 & about 25th sec.

[Sorry, image deleted during forum software upgrade. Please re-upload if so inclined.]

Pretty good shots... the colours are great and the subject are quite relaxed and with a natural pose. This is  something I find really hard to capture and maybe is one of the reasons I don't take pictures of people. Well done !

Ed, this afternoon I am going in to the LF vortex - I have dragged out the Sinar from the cupboard here at work, dusted it off, I tried to do some Polaroids with it but all the film has gone off. So not to be deterred I am going to use some TMAX100 I found. I have asked for the key to the roof to the building as well.

I am going in now - pray for me or whatever it is you do, do it for me!

Wow Ed!
I'm really glad to see you finally got the lensboard for the new toy.
I say a fleeting post a while ago bragging about having this new lensboard... I've always said that things crafted with love by family members are often the best. Same thing goes for lensboards :)

As for Firefox not showing the images as nice as Photoshop and friends, it's probably due to the fact that it's not using the ICC profiles unless you tweak it for them. The images are shown using the "Web colors" set which has less colors.

Here is how to fix it from LifeHacker

Good luck with the Sinar, Ken. And have fun in the LF Vortex. Post results here (natch) if they pass muster. God knows I'll be boring you all rigid with Polaroids from my Tachihara over the coming months.

Francois: Many thanks for the lifehacker link. The photos look OK here at work on my laptop, but I'll get Firefox configured correctly at home according to instructions.

Really good stuff Ed - great compositions of excellent subjects. please to see the tachihara being used too - I was starting to think I might have to set out on a liberation mission to Balham, to rescue it from your cupboard, but I now see that is no longer necessary.  I love the focus fall off on the first one - eyes perfectly sharp.  keep em coming.

there really is something about large format portraiture - probably that you need to enter a process with the sitter - its a collaboration, some how i think this can make the images stronger!

No problem Ed. If you don't want to do it by hand, you can also get the ConfigurationMania plugin... but that might get to be a bit overwhelming when it comes to configuring things (this plugin is pure tweaking madness  :D )

Ed, well it all went really well and totally smoothly as you would expect from a professional shooter like me.

Okay now for the real story. I have been trying to get LF up and going at the workplace for a while, al the components are there except a complete film processing solution. This was solved recently with the purchase of a great jobo 5x4 tank. I did try the polaroids that where in the cupboard but all where no good, so it was real film or nothing.

So what makes a great shoot - well planning before the event tends to be up there somewhere, planning through the event is not. SO for a personal challenge I chose planning through the event, for some variety, it went something like this:

Oh look some spare time to do a  quick test shoot I'll just grab the double dark slides and load up some film

I'll now clean the 8' of dust off of the DD slides and try to find one out of 15 that actually works.

Now load film, damn which way does the notch go, find book, read book, go back and have test run.

Cunningly test loading film into dev tank as well - HA I am clever!

Duck into dark room to load DD slide - learn that Linholf DD's are weird in the dark compared to Toyo

Okay film loaded off to still life room to where camera is set up. Oh damn need a subject, oh there's that still life thread, I'll do something for that ( insert fossiking around smiley here) Damn I have zip to shoot, hell I'll use some stainless steel dev reels

Swtich on lights, damn the light is over head, hell time is short, oh no really when you step back from the soft box that is 3 feet directly over head from the subject it is sort of renaissanceesque lighting, good lets go. Push in DD's damn camera moved, pull DD's out again, tighten everything, stick DD's back in, damn camera moved again, tighten everything with 3 foot pipe handle. Put DD's back in, good all solid, shoot 2 frames no probs.

Off to the dark room, load film! why is it easy to load this stuff out in the light with your eyes closed but it he dark  with you eyes open its hard. How do you know you are a nervous novice LF'er you check for the notch in the film while loading the dev tank  ::)

Film in tank, fill tank with water to wet film, go make coffee, come back pour water into jug for volume measurement - 1400ml  :o :o :o okay no probs Rodinal 1:50, 12mins@20c this rocks. check temp 25c so 7.5 mins lets go, dev in - hell nearly a minute of pouring to get it all in, thats cool shake an dbake then let it sit, okay line up stop and fix.

Mmmmmmmm they look like 1 litre bottles - oh damn! I have 5mins to mix up extra fixer and stop  :o :o :o :o :o

Must try not to get on good work shirt and trousers

whats 1:5 in a litre solution oh hell I need a storage bottle, oh heck they are all full this is not good ( insert fossiking around smiley here) heres one excellent - damn where di that 3 mins with no agitation go !!! new fixer in bottle normal 1 litre of stop with rolling agitation will suffice and all is calm.

Well, stop, fix wash as normal and some wetting for finish, okay I'll just hag them up, okay I will just find something to hang them up with  ::) ::) ::) These old dip and dunk clips will have to do, damn phones ringing and someone's at the office door.

So as you look at the result you will appreciate the journey was greater than the result, but I have the power now, nothing can stand in my way and there is some old Agfa chrome in the fridge

LOL
And hey, no streaks, lines, stains, touches or half moons..
So yeah- that was a success.

I'm always amazed by how much I can 'get away with' in the darkroom, to the extent that if feel mightily ripped off if I do ever find a processing flaw on a neg! well done.

Somehow reminds me of the first time I loaded 120 on a reel... and I wondered why a darkroom is so dark (took me about 15 minutes to get the film on a bone dry reel...)

Gorgeous shots. You can really sense Amy peering into the lens to see what's going on. I set up my LF in the garden for the first time yesterday hoping to take a picture of our cat. The instruction to my youngest not to disturb the moggy was ignored and he swiped at him with a stick. End of photo op.

Karl: Even attempting an LF shot of a cat whilst youngsters were on the prowl was a brave thing to do  :D Shame it didn't work out. Next time maybe try a still life of somethig really exciting, like a bowl of spuds, or a pint of milk.

Ken: Thanks for the hilarious & breathless story (wonderful)...and also the resultant print which I really like. I can't wait to hear how you fare when you finally get onto the roof in good weather.

have been on roof, a full report and scans when I get home.

Forgot to say that I loaded 3 DD's and only got 4 of 6.

News at 7, film at 9, see you then

Well I'm home and working the scanner to death. The shooting and darkroom went well today. Had one blowout with one of the DD's as I put the slide back in the film caught and spat out the holder  :o ??? ??? It was of the hard shot to get - but of course, I had climbed through a window onto a small ledge and got shit all over my clothes. So will have to do it all again later, its a shot I really want. for some reason in the dev tank one of the sheets looks like it got fogged somehow, I will scan and show at some stage.

Anyway some images from around the building

The last one has a woopsie of some description on it, anyone know enough to tell me what it is, On the neg it looks chemical based.

Looks like it's related to agitation in the developer (lighter on the negs). Could be that the film was wrinkled in the tank's film holder if that is possible... or maybe close to the side...

I'm quite envious here... I have had the Jobo 2509 for about 6 months and I STILL cannot load film in the light while looking at it!

Is there any hope for me?? The instructions are not clear to me and when I've gone to forums and read people's text descriptions, I'm still confused.  I feel like I need to see a video clip to see what someone's trying to explain with just words.

So alas... I take my film to be developed but cringe everytime knowing I should be saving my pennies and learning to do it myself.   :-\

Hey Chops, I use a V700 Epson, I knew I would not have room for a enlarger so I went for one of these babies.

With this level of scanning there is only Epson, I have had other brands and they didn't cut it.
