Fujipet Obsession...
« on: January 25, 2009, 12:28:08 AM »
This is how it starts: I never really noticed the Fujipet til recently, but now I'm obsessed. I want one.

So I found someone, in my college alumni group who is currently working in Japan, who is going to try to find me one (or a few, if they're cheap). I know they go for around $200 when they come up on eBay, but any idea what they cost when you can find them in Japan? I'm assuming they're much less over there, right?

Email me direct! I have one right here waiting for the energy to put it on eBay. It is a Series 1 (built a bit heavier than the later one), has a manual, and a bag with a name tag. Happy to pass it on at cost to a fellow filmwaster.

Unfortunately, because of the resurgence in film use in Japan the price of Fujipet in Japan has gone up a lot over the last few years. They are also harder to find. My old camera shop contacts have not called me in ages, and the only supply now appears to be local auctions.  Arigato. Skj.

Would it be fair to say that Skorj single-handedly popularised the Fujipet outside of Japan over the last few years? Seems that way to me. I suppose the worldwide growth in the awareness of toy cams in general recently meant that the time was right, but cometh the time, cometh the man etc.

Maybe... I first heard of them in Michelle Bates's Plastic Cameras book. I did vaguely consider one but they seem too rare and pricey.

Maybe...

Ha! Seeing as the Holga story and the Fujipets on page 83 in Michelle Bates' book both came from me, that is probably correct! The red one is still in my cupboard and was responsible for the photograph of Mr. Lee on page eight, and I think the green one belongs to Sean. Unless of course he sold it to fund the new Aston Martin... Skj.

I didn't want to speak up about Michelle's book so I'm glad Skorj did.

yeah a couple years ago they were selling online in japan for maybe $60 max for colors, even...now even a basic black will go for $150+. makes it less of a deal for skorj to buy and resell on ebay! maybe not worth the hassle.

Michelle gave a free class at B&H last week, which I sat in on. When someone asked about Fujipets and how to get one, she said, 'There's a guy named Skorj who buys them in Japan and sells them on-line."
