ENCOURAGING YOUNG PEOPLE TO USE FILM - FROM JULY PODCAST
« on: September 03, 2010, 12:01:08 PM »
I've been away on holiday and just got around to listening to episode 15 podcast.  Matt Wells' comments about young people rang true with me.  My Son (17) uses an Olympus Trip, Yashica 35 GSM, Yashica Mat and a  'Yukon' charity shop camera.  He loves this stuff because....... it's cool - I'm not sure why, (I'm a parent) - but going out with his bright yellow Yukon is the height of retro cool chic for his generation.  He loves Ilford XP2 processed mail order so it comes back brown, and Agfa Prescia for the bright colours.  For his birthday I went to the Alladins cave of http://www.realcamera.co.uk/ in Manchester, (thankfully they don't take credit cards) and bought him a Retina I (Type 148) 1939-1941 for about £40.  This is apparently the coolest thing he owns and his friends all want one!  He is an avid user of film - uses digital as well and sees no conflict - It only us middle aged types who have boring debates about film v binary.

During the podcast somebody asked how to market to this generation.  You have to use the methods they understand - viral UTube,  Flickr, facebook etc.  They look in Urban Outfitters but think it's a rip off!
I'll post some off his pictures when I get permission (I'm trying to get him to join).

They're not the only ones, I saw a Diana set in there for about £180! Almost fainted on the spot..

I bought a Diana, dreamer version, for my gf as she squeeled a bit when she saw it. worth every penny to share my obsession(?) with film and cameras. did get a nice discount with her being a student though.

...ain't it cute?  ;D

It is. Blimey, I think I paid less than a fiver for my old Diana, admittedly about 8 years ago though.

My 21 year old tends to use his I-phone on most occasions, and just spent some birthday money on a canon dSLR but he does use film. I gave him my Canon 1000fn and my dad's Rollei 35t. He's back from Glasgow at the moment and brought 3 rolls of film back to be developed. He carries the Rollei with him all the time apparently.
I think he'd shoot more film but feels it's a bit too expensive due to his 'scrimp and save' student survival attitude.

I also had my 14 yr old daughter interested for a while and she has developed her own films. Andrea gave her a Petri to play with but she likes the 'instant' results of digital and her interest has waned slightly

My daughter is into digital at the moment but I am just glad that the photo bug has at least bitten.  She tends to take one of her three cameras when ever she goes out with her friends, sometimes comes back having used it sometimes not.

I have tried to persuade her to try film and she says she will but hasn't yet.

Recently she was trying to take some picture of trolls that she had against a white background and when viewing them on the PC asked why the background came out grey.  We got into a discussion on metering which will be useful in the future, if she does use one of the film cameras.

However one of the things that she is doing is getting prints made.
