Scanner problem, help?
« on: November 11, 2008, 01:37:10 PM »
I've got an Epson 3170 scanner and the 'transparency' mode has decided it doesn't want to function. I've been doing a lot of flat bed scanning but went to do some 35mm negs last night. First of all it went on a go slow and then showed a straight flat bed scan of the neg holder. Then the tect button for the transparency option went a paler shade and can't be selected.

Anyone had a similar problem? Any advice from the more IT literate among you?

thanks, Karl

Have you tried unplugging and re-plugging the lid a few times?
Sometimes connectors get oxidized and a bad connection is made. Happened to a friend in his computer and it took him forever to figure it out. Happens mostly in damp climates.

Have you turned it off and then on again?

Learnt that trick from the IT department at work... it's their advice for everything.

Make sure your neg holder is in the right way round and properly positioned :-)

And download the latest software and driver versions from Epson while you're at it.

make sure your document "type"  has not been changed.
It should read, film with film holder.

Re installing helps, but I think it's an OE.
 ;)

Hope this helps.

I doubt it would be a software issue since it seems to be failing in mid scan. But if you want to make sure it isn't a software issue, get the demo of VueScan. It works even without any drivers (it has its own built-in).

But as I said... probably a failing connector. Contact cleaner might help (electronics parts stores carry the stuff, comes in a spray can).

if none of the above works, hoof it out the nearest (prefrably upstairs) window.    It wont fix it  but you will feel better about it being broken.

thanks all. I'll have a bash tonight and if all else fails I like damion's suggestion and I'll go for a rock'n'roll tantrum

i pounded my last scanner into oblivion. it just wouldn't scan properly, regardless of cleaning or anything, all yellow with colored bands. so i put it on the floor and stomped on it.

BINGO. It was the connector plug from the lid to the scanner unit. It had come loose and needed shoving back in!
A positive side effect was that it made me visit the darkroom in town and I developed a load of contact sheets and have come to the conclusion that it's quicker than scanning negs!  :D
Doh.
