Got the guts?
« on: October 16, 2008, 02:27:20 PM »

I assume it would be pretty scarey, but The Photographer's Gallery in London do a regular crit sesh... in front of a members of the pubilc!

http://www.photonet.org.uk/index.php?pvid=998

You present your work and get 30 mins with a pro to discuss.
I thought I'd mention it anyway.

First time I go will be as one of the crowd!

Somehow I read that and failed to read about The PUBLIC. I was more peeved about it being slide or digi projection only and forgot to care about the rest of it. I'd rather actually show my work to someone than show crap projections of it.

Also note that the Photographers Gallery is moving in November and will no longer be near Leicester Square tube station but rather closer to Oxford Circus station now.

Yikes!  That looks like fun/torture!
Good job I'm lightyears away from letting anyone rip my artistic treasures to pieces.

Suppose it could be done as a SKYPE session on here quite easily.

Once a fortnight three people upload one photo each and then spend ten minutes talking and ten minutes being grilled.  Everyone could dial in and listen - could also be a podcast?  All be done in an hour!

Can SKYPE handle lots of users?

Stu: Yikes! Not for the faint hearted I'd have thought. I've been going to the Photographers' Gallery for years and didn't know they did this. Fascinating.

Heather: I had no idea they were moving either. I'm so completely out of the loop. Damn kids!!

Chops: Er, you might have something there. Assuming we could get someone happy to talk through their work in front of the great unwashed filmwaster-types. Skype may not be the best technology host for this sort of event though. There are several others who specialise in hosting conf calls over t'Interweb. Let me talk to the other FWs and see what their thoughts are. I think the idea is kind of audacious and if it can be done in a fun way (i.e. not too precious or judgemental) then I think it might be a lot of fun. Thanks for the great idea.

I'd be happy to put my money where my mouth is and expose my work to the masses.

I've got no shame!  :)

At least it's not like our local Master Photographer's association's yearly portfolio "destroy" sessions :)

Last time I went there, there was only one attendee in the room and three judges up front telling the poor soul how bad his wedding photographs were!

LOL!!!   ;D :D

Francois, that little story merely confirms my belief that there is an awesome comedy show about photographers and photography just waiting to be written.

While it would be fun to do as a podcast, but it could still work very well here on the forum as a thread dedicated to a Critique. - The post pens with nominated photog posting an image and a nominated crit. writing an appraisal. Then all and sundry can question or respond to either the image or to the appraisal. Potentially a good learning process for all-  both on how to improve your photographs and on how to appraise an image. The written form is less dynamic than live- but it gives more time for a considered thoughtful response.

Is there a way to make a new room with only the survey feature enabled?
Might be perfect for the task.
