Kodachrome 64
« on: June 28, 2008, 10:52:51 PM »
When I was 22 I bought a Minolta x300 with a 35-70mm lens. I wanted to be Andre Kertesz. Life was simple! Many moons have passed and I sometimes ponder on what a fine camera it was (in fact the x300 lasted me 14 years before I got a new one). And looking at a few sets of slide film, Kodachrome is just lovely. I've come across some slides from sometime around 1993 0r 1994 from a trip to Goa so I thought I'd scan them. Photoshop hadn't been invented and I don't think I used the internet then but with with a bit of tweaking they came up nice...how times change in our 2 dimensional world.

Sigh. I miss Kodachrome (the Kodachrome they made before they lost the recipe).

Thems were the days.

Oh dear Leon, what have I done? You see I'm a bit red/green colour blind and I started playing around with hue/saturation. Does it look really odd? Advise please and be honest.  I thought it lent it a semi-autochrome/old style hue.

Here's the original. unmanipulated scan...

honest .... the sand is Hulk green and the sky and sea are beetroot red.  It looks a bit like one half of a green/red 3-d image - I like the unmanipulated version though :)

Well, the images looked OK if you suffered from either Protanopia or Deuteranopia ;)

I thought it was some freakish colour infrared shots, not kodachrome so I was kind of confused by the pictures. Yes they look very weird to everyone with full colour vision. Possibly okay to people with zero colour vision (although the people look very dark almost like silhouettes)

Haha, Wow! I thought it was intentional... I rather liked the effect and like Heather thought we were looking at some type of color infrared stuff.

Really interesting regarding the color blindness though. I've often pondered what it must be like- seeing those images give me somewhat of an idea I suppose.

thanks all. being red/green colour blind has it's problems. Problems include:

- I can't immediately see red poppies in a green field or cherries on a tree until someone points them out to me. Then I can see the red when I am closer to them. It's odd listening to my partner cooing over some rural idyll and all I can see is grass.

- I can't see the difference between a red and a brown snooker ball but I don't worry too much as I haven't played for about 20 years. Likewise Trivial Pursuit's green/red pieces of cheese

- Clothing. I bought a lovely chocolate brown shirt last week but it was dark olive green

- and colour photography, obviously

Lord help the person I meet who is bleeding while wearing a green top.

 :)

Well, now I have the Paul Simon song stuck in my head.  And, for sure the bright colors of summer- or something :)

I like the unmanipulated version, of course.
